Default Diesel Alternatives for the B30 engine

Hello all
I am considering buying an ex Swedish army 6x6 Volvo truck (TGB 113) which currently uses a 3.0l petrol engine (B30)as used in the 164 car.

My question is... is there a decent diesel engine that will mate up with the gear box? Has anyone tried swapping their petrol engine for a diesel???

Great web site BTW :-)

I know I'm biased but it would be cheaper, quicker and easier to go to lpg. We've run these engines ourselves on lpg and they convert well. In the 164 we were getting running costs of £8-10 per 100 miles using lpg at 34.9p litre. The engine is kept cleaner and there is no power or performance difference. The equipment costs about £450 and we would instal for an all in price of £700 - instal would take 2 days. If you like further info/discuss call me 01407 832290

The post'93 D24TIC would make a particularly good installation in the 164. It can be tuned easily with similar gains as an electronically controlled diesel. You may need to use the D24 bellhousing but could mate it with an automatic or manual gearbox (ZF4HP22 auto; M90 five speed manual). You will no doubt have the doubters trying to tell you what a dog the D24 is, usually because they have only got hearsay backing not factual for their opinions. We have around 100 diesel versions on the 700/900/90 register alone and most of the owners are quite satisfied with their choice. It has more torque than the B30. Possibily the BMW 3Litre turbo intercooled diesel would be very much better but can you afford one?

All the best, Peter.

Surely Peter it needs to mate to the original box as is a 6 x 6 so adaptor plates would be needed. This is why a suggested lpg as its quickest and easiest and maintains originality + be cheaper than diesel to run!
