Removing wishbone bolts & driveshaft - C70
Hi everyone,
I’ve done a search on here and also the web/YouTube and I can’t find an answers I need... 1) I’ve removed the passenger side wishbone/control arm as the lower ball joint dust cover was shot. It’s The type held on with two bolts at either end - where it joins the ‘chassis’ The two front bolts came out fully but the two further in are held captive by the gearbox...how on earth do you fully remove them, even once free from the wishbone? 2) The passenger side drive shaft has a knocking noise when giving it a wiggle and I’m pretty sure that’s the noise we can hear when driving. With it free from the hub how are you actually suppose to remove it from the gearbox/diff? Room is tight and I can’t get a bar in there to lever it out. Any info or tips appreciated! 2004 C70 RHD manual.

I thought it was going to be an easy job but as the bolts on the c07 run through the subframe and bolt from the back it's a nightmare. If you find an easier way please let me know in case I need to do it again. As for removing the drive shafts you have to pull them quite hard to remove them. if you tie something around the back of them like some metal wire then you can sort of lasso them and pull them from the side of the car. I feel your pain Good luck

Thanks, Winsox.
A pretty daft design! A noticed all online videos show a similar but different mounting set-up for 70 series Volvos. I don’t know if it’s unique to the C70 cab? I’ll post an update soon.

It's not unique, all P1 C70's, diesel V/S70's and (AFAIK) police S/V70's have the 5 bolt wishbone setup. The others have the easier to change 3 bolt wishbones.

I just complected this job, 2 bottom arms as one ball joint was shot,
the job is abit of a pain, getting to the bolts gear box side is worst, you cannot remove the bolts without lifting the engine up, you are supposed to change these bolts however I feel and sure some outhers agree that if you can get them free with a decent open end ratchet spanner you dont really need to replace them unless damaged, it can be tricky to get enough force on the spanner if on your back, the trick is to remove the bolts that come all the way out, then remove the ones you cant replace, when putting them back do it in reverse, the back ones first then the ones that you could replace, As for the drive shaft a bar, or a good hard tug should pull it free. |

Agreed, don't replace the bolts unless you feel they are damaged. I have changed a few of these wishbones on my 850 TDI I have never changed the bolts in 12 years of ownership!

The passenger driveshaft is held in place by a C clip so make sure you have a replacement incase you damage it. You can buy a proper tool, looks like a two pronged fork that fits between the driveshaft and gearbox - seen a mechanic use one, slipped it in place wiggled and bingo, so much easier than trying to force it free!

Never knew there was a proper tool, I've always used a tyre lever. Oh well, that is another tool I need to buy now.
