Still not enough statistical material to conclude firmly, but as it stands now, about 1 out of 8 have had issues in the hard and average group, with one of about 16 in the gentle group.

Also is very subjective. Since buying my S60 I am yet to notice another Volvo being driven... in a spirited way, I don't expect all drivers to drive hard like I do, but my general observation of volvo drivers is that they are afraid to rev their cars, drive at 69mph in the overtaking lane and take an age to get to 40mph, let alone 60mph. So, from my point of view atleast, I wonder how many of those "moderate" drivers are really "gentle" drivers.
I was in a colleagues car for the first time on the weekend, one who proclaims to drive moderately quick and considerately (i.e. indicators). However, he was slow, changing up at 2000rpm and did not indicate once on our 4 mile journey, despite twice turning in front of waiting traffic. |

I make most journeys astride a motorbike. There are very few occasions when you can actually make progress in a car the way you can on a bike.

Indeed, I do miss the bike, but I don't miss the cold wet mornings when I can now sit in heated leather and listen to the radio.

Mine has heated grips, heated saddle and a fairing. Takes the edge off the winter commuting.

So, my way of driving my C30 has resulted in...
NOTHING! Now with more than 115.000 miles it is still on it's first clutch, it's first exhaust (though the back pot needs a replacement), first transmission (though I think a new one wouldn't go a miss! ) and it's first drive shafts. My economy is still well better than that claimed by Volvo (I can use one tank fill of petrol for 2 weeks, even though I drive about 740 km (about 465 miles) in that period and it is still smooth (though not as smooth as the Jag ) and chirpy. It get's it's top speed sorted quickly and goes faster than it should. Not a speck of rust on her and I've had her now more than 6 years... I guess I'll never part with her - unless of course some dumb erm turd takes my right of way...

Surely this survey's results can only be valid if everybody that has voted has purchased from new and have been the ONLY owner.
All our Volvo's have been 'nearly new one owner examples' but it still doesn't rule out the first owners contributions to its life expectancy ! As the op didn't make it clear on my above point I've voted anyway ! my vote is obo the wife as I rarely get to drive her Volvo's She drives our C30 2.0D like a saint (not THE Saint !) and only does around 5K miles a year so a petrol was the logical choice but fuel economy in the 2.0 is woeful ! We concluded it was up to me to give it a blast a least once a week as that seems to have worked out well for all three previous diesel Volvo's we have owned The fact ours have not been 'abused' by us has made little difference to their overall reliability ! Although engines and gearboxes in all of ours have been uber reliable all have experienced clutch, suspension and electrical issues. The S60 D5 ate bulbs and drop links and had continuous door module issues. Our C70 also had clutch, drop link and several central locking issues. Our S40 was a great car but with a problematic and dangerous flat spot between 1000 and 1500 revs that Volvo UK approved of I await our C30's first electrical gremlin as experience has told me it WILL happen Last edited by losboz; Apr 22nd, 2014 at 17:05. |

You're right there BUT then again: you can always alter the way of wear on an engine with a different driving style.
I've seen engines, clogged up after 100.000 miles from one owner. Bad compression rates. Very rattly. The buyer then drove it hard for a while (really hard meaning when cold it was thrashed etc.) and the rattles went. The compression rates lifted again... etc.

ok this is how I drive
Gentle acceleration ,read road ahead if look like traffic slowing I take foot off acclerator and drop into neutral and coast along at 800 rpm , as I approach traffic i select the most appropriate gear and gentle acceleration , I rarely have to brake, .if I know lights will change before I get there I drive with this in mind , similar if I see traffic ahead slowing then I ease off acceleration .
OK only change I now do is , never coast as I was reading my highway code and this is forbidden, on the whole I trend to keep up with traffic . I would love to drive 80s style , no traffic and clear roads , my fav drive was Scotland to England m6 new years day as the fireworks started .it used to be me and maybe 3-4 trucks and a sprinkling of light snow ,nice music _-------paradise |
