Just been reading your post & woud like to ask , Does the Lambda light ever turn on then go off later on ? . I know the 5 cylinder engine is very critical in relation to it's pump timing , have a live data read / dynamic pump timing read performed .

It may simply be the injection pump belt is streched , allowing injection timing to drift . Replace the belt & have dynamic timing performed & all should return to as was

Hi everyone. I have had all the belts changed including the diesel pump one. The timing was set up by Wayne at Chipwizards about 18 months ago. My car has done 226,000 miles. Could the automatic gearbox fluid need renewing as i have not had it changed and done about 50,000 miles? Thanks.

I will ring doingitsideways soon. I have'nt forgot about you. Just been busy at the moment.

Auto gearbox oil is unlikely to be absolutely shafted after 50k unless you pull massive weight.

Not gonna do any harm to change it though.

Should be a nice cherry red on the dipstick, not brown or smell burned.

The pump timing has to be done again after belt changes ...

Hi Clan. All the belts got changed about 18 months ago and Wayne at Chipwizards set the pump belt timing up. The car went good until one day went flat...

Have you checked the bottom intercooler hose? It's common for the jubilee to rot away causing a huge boost leak.

As these engines get older the little foibles get forgotten, but the pump timing on these was an annual service item and its very, very critical.

I had a later (PH2) car with this engine that had inexplicable random bouts of asthma that were eventually after I'd part exchanged the car traced to the fuel temperature sensor in the diesel pump being on its way out. This sensor was used to determine injection angle. The car had all the symptoms of the pump timing being wrong, but we couldn't find anything wrong with it.

If it is that, then the part is cheap but you have to take the pump apart to fit it. well documented on the VW T4 forums.

First thing to do is get the timing checked.
