Hi all my daily is the t5 at the mo and its dropped a bit during the cold weather to about 24 around town and strangely enough 35 on a run but to be honest I need a cheaper run around. Does anyone recommend a good diesel which they may use themselves for work etc.?
Great car but an acholic to say the least....

Get your self a wee mk4 golf with the 1.9 tdi PD engine. Any newer and you get the 2.0ltr, not as good an engine. Great runaround nippy and economic no DPF to worry about.

From my experience of running a diesel car in the winter I’d suggest that unless you’re doing daily 20 mile plus runs then a diesel is of questionable use. I had a Saab 9-3 diesel which would return over 50 mpg when I had a 60 mile daily commute. Then I changed jobs and the journey to work became 6 miles each way. In the winter months the engine never actually warmed up, the heater never reached temperature, the mpg struggled to get much above 30, and the car became difficult to start each morning because the battery never got a decent charge. Diesels don’t make good runaround cars.

Currently I have a Nissan Note petrol automatic. It’s a excellent little car, and returns 38mpg despite only ever being used for short journeys. It’s well built, completely reliable, easy to drive, very practical, and cheap to tax and insure.

Short trips and diesels don’t always mix well!

Cheers

Jack

Think yourself lucky - that's good mpg for a B5234T3 imo! My R does around 18 town driving ....

avoid pds between 55-07 plate. bad batch of nitride coating on the lifters mean the cams punch holes in them.

Dan
Captain Jack provided the final nail in the coffin for me in consequence of which I bought my lad a 1.6 man Nissan Note in Feb for him to learn to drive in. He passed ( fantastic tutor ) in July and adding him as a named driver was cheaper than a 1.2 Fabia.

Lots of room - 4 of us did a return trip to Torquay in Sep with a weeks worth of gear with ease. I cannot say what she does in town as most of my miles is motorway but cruising at 70 with some urban mixed in is getting me a sniff under 50mpg. Easy to maintain, you just have to wait for the right car to come along.

I paid £1200 fOr my SVE but needed two new tyres. Just passed the MOT this week, nothing to spend, no advisories.

A little less hassle than my R which has been at Lakes for 5 months !!!!!!! And the sunroof cassette still not replaced and looking like it will not be. I hear there is a bloke in Waltham Abbey though, very good at replacing them ?

Where did you get your cassette matey ?

Actually just got the cambelt and aux belt changed on Friday. Cambelt showed slight signs of wear but h aux belt started to show some cracks so grateful that's all done. 146,000 miles and doing well.

The seal must have been breached for a number of years as the front edge of the frame is corroded badly, flaking in fact ! Regrettably did not notice until after I had bought her.

The source of your replacement really is the ultimate insult - Bernard is driving me crackers - taken over 5 months to get an MOT - and yes I am serious !!!!!!!
On the assumption I will end up doing it myself what should I expect to pay for a new cassette ?

Sounds like your cambelt replacement went a dream - I always have unscheduled hassle !
