Saloon spoiler clips
So the final prototype arrived today for the saloon 850T5R spoiler clips which I believe also fit other models. They are required to be 3d printed out of metal which granted is expensive. Is this of interest to anybody?

Fair play to you, Gaztech! They are a simple thing to look at, or overlook, but quite complex to design and manufacture I imagine. I was considering 304 stainless or aluminum replacements but where do you even start with all the bends etc.
Put me down for a pair as, although not yet needed, I will require these at some point in the not too distant future. Do you have a 5 door/estate version too?

You sir are quite correct, it was 10hours on CAD to get right. I tried my best to get them to work out of 3d printed plastic with extra reinforcement but it just won't work as a long term solution. I'm waiting on some quotes from China for producing them out of aluminium. I have used the company before and their quality of work is excellent. The cheapest quote so far in the UK is just shy of 100 a clip which is just too expensive in my opinion. I will keep you updated

I know...I know...and costs have probably hindered previous attempts at same. Just bear in mind that Europeantuning have this replica 854 R spoiler with "fitting materials" listed for €189. What exactly those fitting materials consist of I have no idea but I'll hazard a guess at 3M adhesive pads.

Also to answer your question I haven't done the estate spoiler brackets yet but again, if this was of interest to people, I would give it a go. I don't know how important a thing it is for people, if they are willing to spend what is looking like nearly 200 a set.

Are they the same as the ones pictured? (some on ebay just now)
The prices being quoted & advertised for used is really daft money:~ I don't have that style of Volvo but looking at these then it would be quite a straight forward task to make them up in stainless steel, basic tools would also suffice- or go to a local fabricator and see what they say: They are only bent metal with simple shapes! Hope it helps. Bob. |

No, they are the wagon spoiler clips. The saloon ones are entirely different and are quite small and intricate. Thanks

Unfortunately I would suspect that your market for these is very small. I haven't done the sums myself, but if you look on "how many left" and check out the number of saloons still on the road I suspect that number would be fairly small, and gradually falling. A smaller number still would have a spoiler fitted. Then make an assumption on how many of them would ever need spoiler brackets (I would think 10% would be quite generous) and the result is an estimate of your potential entire market - in the UK at least.
I assume that these brackets are handed (LH and RH) so that doubles your manufacturing costs? I stand to be corrected, but that's the way my thinking would be going on this.

I think you are absolutely right. They aren't sided no they are identical. I'm looking into the sheet metal stamping and plastic coating as per the original part but you are likely on the money, not worth the effort but it would be nice to have the option.

Skandix had the genuine 850 kit 1399234 and the S70 kit 1399411 listed but have been NLA for some time. They appear to still have the 5 door type 9499234.
It sure would be fantastic if you could manufacture a batch of these, Gareth, I have great admiration for your ingenuity and appreciate the time you have spent designing these but, as Luxobarge says, and with all due respect, the demand is going to be relatively low. If you could somehow significantly get the manufacturing costs down, perhaps then get the bigger suppliers onboard you may have a better chance of reaching a wider customer base. But even then will they sell? Just to put the cost into perspective...€200 would have 4 sets bought and shipped from VPARTS in Sweden. Unfortunately, for me, they still haven't sorted shipping to ROI
