To me the decline in numbers of former common metal had gone unnoticed until I saw one at a show and started to think.... My neighbour had a nice Sierra but only after he replaced it did I start to look for Sierras in use - and there are very few now. Not a bad car (and I'm no Ford lover) but they were of a season, so to speak, and their time is now passed. Therefore the few owned by enthusiasts are in very nice condition and rightfully attend car shows: at least their future is assured. My late father had a '79 Simca 1100 from new - a popular and reasonable smallish car of its era, yet I saw recently that only a handful are known to survive now.

Getting back to Volvo, how many 145s are around now - very few it seems. A very spacious long-lived car, yet now unfortunately rare. I run its successor, a 245, simply because I couldn't find a 145. High mileage now and starting to get rusty arches etc, so I bought a rust-free Torslanda simply so I have something in store for the inevitable day. I also still have my early 240GLT estate which welders have quoted a totally uneconomic price to get legal again - over twice what I paid for my current 245, so that says it all really.

I also have a good and very low mileage '76 244, but with only a 4-speed 'box never returned over 20mpg - probably the main factor such cars are no longer wanted. Also most classic car shows don't recognise early 240s as being classics yet, but thats getting back to a previous thread....
