Did this job again today, far easier and faster doing it this time around.

Disconnected the battery and the CEM, took the opportunity to clean it out with contact cleaner, no issues.

Have my V50 in the garage. They've removed the fuse holder/CEM unit to gain access to change the pollen filter. On refitting the fuse holder/CEM unit, the dashboard lights now work for about a minute and then go dark, showing a couple of warning lights only (gauges etc not illuminated). Apparently this is a common problem with a V50. They have tried cleaning elec connections to the fuse holder/CEM unit and are stuck what to do next! Any thoughts gratefully received. Many thanks

Firstly, bollock them for disconnecting the CEM, it's doesn't need removing/unplugging when you change the pollen filter. All you should do is pull the CEM down into its bracket, then remove the 2 nuts from the back that hold the bracket on. Then just pull the bracket and CEM off all at once.

From what I've heard from others, I would try pulling all the plugs and disconnecting the battery, then putting all the plugs back making sure they are fully connected.
Any that aren't in 100% would cause chaos. Then put the battery back on and pray.

Other than that it would be a dealer or Volvo specialist.

Thanks so much Petey. Apparently one of the relays had gone and they've now fixed it.

When I did the job I disconnected the CEM, but had the battery disconnected at the time. Maybe they didn't disconnect the battery first and that's what blew the relay?

I actually replaced my Cabin Filter at the weekend, I'd forgotten just how awkward it is!

There were a few WTF? moments but I had the job done in 40mins, tried to be clever and use ratchet spanners on the 13mm nuts on the white bracket but the access was bad so went back to the socket/extension bar combo.

My next target time will be 30mins

you dont need to take the white bracket out , just bend the arm in a bit to give clearance ... This was a 50 minute job on volvos standard time list in 2004 when launched , then it was cut to 30 miniutes in 2007 as technicians learned how to get around it , and in about 2012 the standard time was reduced to 12 minutes !

I did actually bend the bracket a bit to help once and found it surprisingly easy to move; it's a good point though Clan.

To be fair I reckon I've done it in 20 minutes.
