Well I know everything is solid and there's nothing loose so more embarrassing than worrying.

Would that same advice apply to the V70 of the same era? Lots of knocking, kind of like old wooden floorboard noise coming from both front wheels. Not lug plugs, instinct says top mounts? Top mounts, struts and control arms are the only suspension components i know, however. I'm sure there's more!

Is the noise a clonking or a squeaking type? If clonks it could be the drop links, a short lived grinding sort of crunching noise on full or nearly full left or right lock is usually the steering stops need greasing, where as if it is a heavy ticking/knocking noise on full lock that is more likely to be the CV joints.

Check also that the axle bolts are tight, they can work loose over time - if my memory serves me correct they should be dry thread torqued to 35Nm, then a further 90 degrees.

You can also get some very odd noise from worn drive shafts but that is usually more apparent when moving off in either reverse or forward gear from stationary - but usually worse when going off in reverse having previously been going forwards.

Hi Tony,

Just a thought. I think it might be worth checking whether the top strut bearings are bad.

At a standstill, have one person inside the car with the engine running, turning the steering wheel from side to side, with another person holding the stop of a strut where it pokes into the engine compartment. (And do the same on the other side).

When the struts are under load like this, maybe worn bearings would show up as a lack of smoothness as the wheel turns.

HTH
Steve

I recently got a c70 and have been fixing faults, i had a clunking and screech at low speed turning it was the lower arms and ball joints, one side had a lot of viable play the other had nearly none but when hot really did start to clunk,

changed both side no more noises.
