Good afternoon chaps
Invested in the Volvo tool for the job, heated the cockpit up in today’s sunshine, gaitor removed, smaller diameter bore part of the tool under the plastic clips but she will not move for love or money Any guidance much appreciated |

It requires an awful lot of force to get going. Also ensure the tool is inserted as far as you can get it in. Once in I'd suggest pulling the knob as opposed to trying to push up on the tool if that makes sense.

Cooks how are you amigo ?
Makes perfect sense - as much as not breaking those damn clips - which I am keen to avoid ! Why is it so damn tight ? |

I'm just sitting as a passenger whilst my brain cells commit suicide one by one, thanks to a complete lack of stimuli. Worth it in the long term. Yourself?
I believe it's tight as the two fuse slightly over time (any oils, seat, debris, etc), aided by contraction of the plastic as it fits through heat cycles.

Hanging in there buddy hanging in
Tried her again this afternoon and no joy, reckon I shall be asking for help from a second pair of hands in next day or two. Orange leather is due to arrive tomorrow so I am rather keen ! Getting a decent amount of interest in my T5 as well, I know she has a shoddy exterior but I would like to see her go t9ba good home, absolutely confident there are a few years in her yet All the best |

Hi ya Cooks
Tried again with second pair of hands and no joy Is it possible to remove the gearstick shaft by popping the plastic clip on the gear assembly ?? Forgot to send last message since which I have put a strap wrench on the knob as well - no movement whatsoever so I am toying with the idea somebody has taken it off previously and glued despite all sections of clip apparently in place |

This video shows the process to do what you're suggesting. Almost guaranteed breakage of that white plastic cage, and potential damage to the shifter bushings (cheap enough) - and after all that you still have a hard time getting the knob off.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ObGUZDT6ChU Are you certain the tool is fully inserting and releasing those clips? The pics Basher popped up on the other thread show approximately how deep it needs to go to ease the clips off.

Howdy Cooks
No I am not entirely sure but I think the tool is up as far as she will go as I can see the clips spread away from the shaft at the base I will have a look again at the original post but at the mo I am under the impression somebody has taken it off before and glued her on - just does not make sense Really appreciate your input and might well remove the shaft and see if it is any easier in a vice |

Good idea - it almost certainly will be easier, and no risk of damaging anything that the shaft is attached to lower down eh?
