Default New (old) engine or rebuild.... And fault?

So, to shorten the story.

My aux belt went one day.
Drive the car to a garage.
They fit a new belt.
Belt breaks the next morning on way to work (well, I made it 5 meters!).
Garage can't work out why. Keep talking about timing belt being old (was due to be replaced at 100k miles but it had clicked over 100k miles between services).
Car starts but with misfire
Old garage pays for a new specialist garage to have a look who confirm an old timing belt, that's it's out a bit
New garage suggest an old second hand engine would be cheapest fix
No one can find a second hand engine
New garage probably going to have to strip the engine down to see what's what.
(I am aware that there has been stories of aux belt causing issues with timing belt, even though timing belt is encased).
Local independent Volvo man (who was too busy to look at my car) says it doesn't matter how overdue the timing belt was, if it worked it worked. If it didn't, it didn't!

First question from me...
Anyway I could find out what caused to timing belt issues? I'e I drove my car into the garage when the first belt went.... I couldn't do the same after the second one went.

This has been ongoing since Jan due to Covid for a start

You don't mention what engine you have which might be useful. If you have breakdown cover you might be able to get them to collect it from your home and take it to a garage. I've heard about a place called Shemtek near Newark I think, they seem to get good reviews. If the belt has jumped a tooth it might not have done much damage but if it rattles switch it off. If it hasn't put a hole in a piston you might get away with just a head rebuild. Still a big job though but not as big as an engine swap.

Sorry, the car is already in the garage. It went to garage one day 1 (when it broke originally) then back to the garage the day after when it broke again. It's been there and the other garage since Feb.

I hope it is an easier/cheaper fix.

One of my questions is however, if the aux belt damaged the timing belt, is there any way I can prove it was the second belt snapping that caused the damage.

Ps it's a D3.

Volvo has at least 5 different D3 engines out there, 4 and 5 cylinder engines.

D5204T2, D5204T3, D5204T5, D5204T7, D4204T4

Which one is it?

Good boy that's exactly what we need.

Well these engines have issues with auxiliary belts which have to be replaced every 20000 miles or so and are cheap to replace. However the engines are not, if the belt got pulled in the engine while it got shredded into million pieces then you may have some internal damage (or not) but nothing too serious. If the timing belt was shifted a tooth or 2 then you will probably get away with no damage.

Yeah, not sure when the aux belt was changed before. I have issues with the fact I went through 2 in 2 days however!

The car worked after the first one went, but not after the second!

So no one knew about 3 types of tensioners?? There are 36000, 54000 or 108000 tensioner change intervals. Volvo issued a service bulletin for a premature belt failure. Your car should have been recalled by the dealer.

The first garage said they checked them all.

When was this recall notification? I only had the car since summer 2018. Previous owner had it from new

Previous owner cannot recall a....erm....recall notice

I think it was from 2010 to 2012 but can't be sure, mine had a recall.

Previous owner is lying to you, he has been called by the dealer but never got it fixed, I think his mechanic knew about that problem and changed his aux belt every 20000 miles otherwise he would have had this problem a long time ago.
