Renew fuses 1, 11 and 13 Don, is your battery charger the old skool type or one of these "smart chargers"?

Question Fuel pump relay

Immediately thought of the fuel pump relay but it looks fine inside and has been replaced by me some time ago. Checked electrics but bit fat spark at plug so it is not that. Bridged the fuel pump relay contacts 30 and 87/2 with the ignition off with a jumper wire but no noise from the pump. Connections are ok on the under car pump so is it safe to point the finger of "you are knackered " at it ???
After reading this post from "besidetheseaside" it's got me thinking about getting a fuel pump relay to have as a spare, but which one to get ? mines a 1995/1996 LPT 940 2.3ti automatic, I've seen white ones and green ones for sale on fleabay at varying prices, don't mind the cost, just want the best and correct one, can anyone advise me, thank you in advance, David.

Old skool, plenty of power..... I will replace those fuses now and recheck once the downpour has eased.

Given your car is on the changeover point David, your best bet is to pull the ashtray out and then the Central Electrical Board and note down the part number of the fuel pump relay and the colour, then buy the equivalent.

The main fuel pump takes a fair bit of power Don, even an old skool battery charger might struggle. As Tony pointed out, tapping a pump with a screwdriver handle or similar can often restart it if it's sticky.

Well thanks to Tony she is running again I give the pump a good thump, connected everything back up and she is running fine I had resoldered the relay already this morning and replaced all the fuses but I think it was just a stuck pump, simples.
I am going to use her sparingly for the next few days and will fit a new relay, fuel filter and pump just to be certain, and replaces all the fittings and clips. My mate has a ramp so it will be much easier to do on there

Thanks for all your suggestions and help guys, it is much appreciated.

PS got a filter and relay already on the way but thinking this should be ok for the pump.

It will be the white one for those years, but as Dave says the fuse box can be accessed faily easily by removing the ashtray and cover. I think it just pulls out after releasing a couple clips, and you can see the white relay.

Good to hear you got it diagnosed and fixed temporarily. Seems it was the external pump.

The relay has several failure modes, some of which are internal to the moulded parts, not just cracked solder joints. It just runs quite hot so it doesn't last like a reblock engine does. Good to keep a spare in the glove box though.

When mine went it would grumble when priming instead of a nice whine, gradually went more and more intermittent until I tracked it down and replaced the intank pump.

Good to hear you're up and running again Don, that pump should do the job but expect to have to change over several bits from the old one, it looks kind of bare!

My fuel pimp has been whining ever since i got the car I find that if I keep the tank full then I can't hear it so the problem goes away. :

I've got a replacement which I will fit at some point, I keep it in the car for when the pump does fail. The replacement has been in its box for over two years now haha

Add 100ml of synthetic ATF to the full fuel tank Damo, you'll be surpised!
