Default Rear lamps

Tonight’s pleasing, but expensive, little job was swapping out the rear lamp units on one of my 940s for genuine Volvo replacements. The only thing wrong with the old ones was the lenses on the fog lamps had clouded over. I shall save the old ones and one day attempt to polish and clear-coat them.

It is a pleasure to use genuine Volvo units. They are an exact match for the originals and come complete with new bulb holders and bulbs. About £120 each from Viking Parts; but cheaper there than Skandix.

For anyone contemplating this job it is worth being aware that for the late 940s with clear indicator lenses most third-party replacements are NOT exact matches being stepped at the bottom (like the older units with orange lenses) rather than straight. This is a minor point but could be irritating if only replacing one unit.

I didn’t think to take a “before” picture. The first picture has one of the new units already in place but both originals were just as bad as the one on the right in that picture.

I also took the opportunity to enable both rear fog lamps as bulbs were fitted in both. The last of my three 940s to receive this mod. Complicated only slightly in this instance by a tiresome wiring mod done by the previous owner for some trailer wiring long since removed.

These are the bits needed to restore butchered wiring to stock.

The 2.5mm-6mm crimp is needed to accommodate both wires on the foglight wiring and the correct insulating cover is the black one.

I have a pair of those on my 760, "Made in France" on the Volvo label by Valeo (conglomorate of Paris-Rhone, Ducellier, Delco-Remy, Cibie and maybe one or two others) and ai also have a pair of them with very faded fog lamp lenses.

I tried a few products to remove the miliness on them but found it had actually permeated through the whole lens, not just the surface.

You could try using a red LED fog lamp bulb in the faded ones or once the glue holding the lenses on the main chassis of the lamp assembly becomes old, it becomeseasy to gently pry the lens off, using a scalpel to assist in separating the lens, glue and chassis. Sometimes gentle application of a heat gun also softens the glue enough to remove the lens.

If you can find a clear lacquer with UV filters in, now would be a good time to spray your new ones to protect them from the sun. Also if you do find a lacquer with UV filters, please let me knwo so i can do mine!

Looks good.

I did mine around 2 months ago. I had bought them from a forum member a while ago. My fog light lenses were very faded.
