I don't see a reason why you can't use the Toyota equivalent, providing it meets the same spec as AW-1. You wouldn't really be "mixing" fluids as such by using the Toyota fluid to do sump dumps, even though your car has AW-1 that you got from Volvo. If there's Volvo AW-1 fluid in your transmission now & the Toyota fluid you mentioned meets the same spec as what's already inside, then you're basically using the same spec fluid, albeit from a different brand. Its the spec that matters most, you can use what brand you want. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Volvo changed the XC90 transmission fluid spec to JWS3324/AW-1 in 2012. Any XC90 models older than 2012 with the TF80 gearbox required JWS3309 spec fluid. The transmission fluid spec requirement in other Volvo models (NOT THE XC90) changed to JWS3324/AW-1 around 2011. Therefore, other Volvo models apart from the XC90 that are older than 2011 with the TF80 transmission would have required JWS3309 spec fluid. So basically; XC90 2011 or older - JWS3309 transmission fluid XC90 2012 or newer - JWS3324/AW-1 transmission fluid Other Volvo models (Excluding the XC90) 2010 or older - JWS3309 transmission fluid 2011 or newer - JWS3324/AW-1 transmission fluid ****This applies to vehicles with the TF80 transmission****

Toyota Type WS ATF OR AISIN ATF 6+ Fuel Economy (Type WS) Both seem to be the correct spec (JWS3324), both no doubt high quality, and importantly significantly cheaper then Volvo AW-1: 5L of Aisin WS, £43 https://www.roughtrax4x4.com/5-litre...-ws-grade.html 4L of Volvo AW-1, £80 https://www.partsforvolvosonline.com...8b9b0e042447ac

If there's Volvo AW-1 fluid in your transmission now & the Toyota fluid you mentioned meets the same spec as what's already inside, then you're basically using the same spec fluid, albeit from a different brand. Its the spec that matters most, you can use what brand you want. If you're really concerned about mixing fluids, then do a full flush of the transmission. By "flush", I mean using the "Gibbons method"... The Gibbons method of flushing where a drain and fill are included in the circuit and the car's pump moves the fluid around, drawing in fresh fluid and dumping the old stuff. On the Volvo, you remove the line to the transmission oil cooler and put that to waste. Then you need another pipe to a container of new fluid into the oil cooler. When the car is started, the old fluid is pumped to waste and the new fluid is drawn into the system. Considering Aisin-Warner (manufacturer of the TF80-SC in Volvo's) supplies Toyota with transmission's, I'd be confident in using the Toyota fluid (given Toyota's reliability record). Just double check that it meets JWS3324/AW-1 spec though before buying.

I think part of the problem is the WS spec is proprietary, they've never fully released the spec, so say you have a Toyota that requires WS, you only have two 'true' options and that's Aisin or Toyota WS ATF. This is just what I've learned from reading on the topic, I'm no expert!
Both ATF's meet JWS3324, so you would assume they have the same characteristics, but that is brought into question when you look at the viscosity data on the MSDS: So with that in mind perhaps I'm best not doing the sump dump method

Some very interesting points raised above!!!
Firstly as we all know the Box is made by Aisen Warner (have I miss spelt that) so is used a cross a range of manufacturers. Accordingly the ATF fluid will not be specific to one brand. Secondly Volvo don’t make their own oils so there must be one company making it. Thirdly.... I changed mine at 75,000 and will next change it at 150,000. Now granted, it is expensive stuff, no doubting that. But given how infrequent the changes are why not just shell out on the proper stuff... |

When I priced against Euro car parts it was cheaper to go direct to volvo. Generally that’s been my experience. Now granted, every oil filter for example says ‘Volvo Mann’ however many people on here seem very proud they can purchase unbranded parts at a higher cost than Volvo which to me is absolutely bizarre!!! 🤪🤪 |

...and I purchased 20 (yes, 20) litres of correct spec 0-30 plus 3 Manns for under £70.
And so on, and so on |

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LUKOil-GE...kAAOSwCB5frQaw I was watching and the seller offered a discount to £50, plus 3 filters at 6.50 each. Look forward to seeing the receipt. |

Thanks for that. I wasn’t joking, that’s a good price and lukoil is reputable, I will get that! I don’t suppose out of interest you have ever got hold of low cost AW-1 transmission oil have you? I would be happy to get it in 20l drums. |
