Hello
Finally i got my beloved 2003 volvo xc 70 d5 awd.
Beautiful blue one......but......here we go.
it only costed 800 pounds. because the person that sold to me said the transmission slipped.
i got it last week. She is beautiful but need loads of tlc. I changed the oil (Castrol Magnatec 5w 30). Started to clean her she is getting the attention she deserves.
Now the so much needed help ...... when i was bring her home the owner said she could be driven in manual. Well, i tried the manual ...and worked very well, i also drove it in Auto and worked also, but sometimes on hard acceleration from 1800 to 2300 it vibrates, but no slip or anything like i saw on videos on the net. I started to read about transmissions, and about oil and color of the oil.....of course i checked mine....it was BLACK . i got Mannol jws3309 and i started to change it by the lower part 2,5 litters at each time, i managed to replace 9 liters (from the 12 i guess its needed), but i only bought 10 liters, so i didn't want to be short, i already ordered 10 more.
All went well, each time i changed oil i would replace it with new oil and go for a ride 4 or 6 miles then stop again and repeat the process.
I noticed that the vibration was still there but maybe less. then i read it could be one of the torque engine mounts or a axle that could be the cause.
So i was ok with it......now comes the THING. Yesterday i was driving it to a friend house, and there was a CLUNK. and the gear number or the D on the dash became a "-" nothing else and it felt it was on 4th gear. there was the yellow triangle and saying transmission service....its been there since i got it. After i stopped the car i have start it up....and worked again. On manual or auto all good.
Then i started to drive in Manual, but now after a wile i dont know if it is distance or speed related, it gets stacked on 4th no matter if you change to Auto or press forward or back wards on the gear stick, it doesn't change until you stop the car turn off the ignition and started it again. then it will drive again, after a wile it gets on 4th again until you turn it off and on back again

This is my story
Any ideas thoughts solutions........is this a body valve thing?
Please Obi Wans you are my only hope.......

For a cheap car where you want to do the maintenance yourself you should invest in Volvo VIDA software withe the DICE interface.

Very quickly you will realise it is the best money you will have ever spent on your Volvo.

That will tell you what is causing the transmission control module to throw errors.

You have posted in the 2007 onwards section, so unless a moderator is kind enough to move it, then you may have more luck posting in the relevant section:https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=19

If you are changing the ATF it is worth doing a transmission reset to re-learn the adaptions which you can do using VIDA / Dice. When the transmission detects a problem it will lock into 3rd gear as you've described. Yes, it probably is the valve that is at fault, but the get the correct diagnostic gear and it will help isolate the problem.

You can clear the codes with your obd2 and normal gear change will resume until next time. you should invest in vida/dice and then will know the problem.

My opinion, it must be something electrical, or it shouldn't be solved with a turn off and on .

Not necessarily. When you get the 'transmission service required' message and the gearbox locks into 3rd, this is the control system kicking in to reduce chance of damage, but still allowing the car to be driven. Turning it off and on simply resets the protection feature but does not necessarily mean the underlying problem has gone away. If you read the DTC's using appropriate diagnostic tools it will narrow your search down to what is triggering the system to go into the 'limp mode'.

I understand...
Well i have changed the oil sump until red oil its the only thing getting out.....guess what....now it drives ok, manual or auto, no more on 4th. i scanned with the obd and the only code that is on is a P0700. So far 200 miles and its smood.
I also bought the vida volvo program and the obd adapter, it will arrive next week. i guess i need to reset the gearbox? Any more tests you think i should do...well i need to learn the volvo vida... I also bought all engine mounts, the vacuum and the torque ones. replacing them this weekend. Also have new brake disks and pads.....

Any ideas about the gearbox? was it because the oil was REALLY dirty?
Many Thanks
