440 Possible Alternator Fault
Hi over the winter when starting the car from cold ive had occasional fanbelt squeal and the rev counter doesnt work until the cars warmed up and the belts stopped slipping, the cars been fine until today when i changed the oil and filter, then i got no fanbelt squeal and no rev counter working which was unusual from the way its been running, tonight while driving to work the battery has gone flat i pressume it hasnt been charging, the fanbelt seems fine and theres no warning lights on, im not sure if ive knocked the alternator while fitting the filter or wether the alternator has packed in and is coincidence, anyone any suggestions. Just to add it had a decent battery fitted 3 week ago so thats fine.

Have you checked the altentor belt? sounds like something finaly gave up the ghost, if the altenator was working or not, you'd still expect the squeeling coming from the belt, unless the altenator pully has fully disengaged from the altenator shaft and is rotating freely, in which case it would have less friction to work against.

If the alternator belt is squealing (and in my experience it usually is the smaller 3 or 4-rib belt that causes the noise) then definitely tighten it.
To check the alternator is working, with the engine running, measure the voltage between the two battery connectors. You can get a cheap volt meter from Wilkos that will do the job for under a tenner. If you are getting around 14 volts, the alternator is working. If not, the battery will not be charged. |
