Default Uneven rear tyre wear

Don't know whether this should be in Wheels/Tyres or Suspension, but here goes:

2002 V70 D5, 65 k miles.

Punctured rear near-side tyre last week & noticed on replacement a weird wear pattern. As mentioned in many postings here, the outside was worn significantly more than the inside, and I'll take that as a hazard of ownership. What is more unusual is the wear was very uneven around the circumference of the tyre (i.e. if you look at the tyre as a clock, the wear at 12 o'clock was much worse than the wear at 6 o'clock).

A colleague suggests that this could be due to either
a) a badly balanced wheel - too late to check now, but I can't say I noticed anything significant when it was in use, though I do normally sit at the opposite corner of the car.
b) wheel bearings shot.

Before I open up my wallet to my local independent (Carpenters, Hampton Court - not too bad in my opinion), I wondered if anyone had any suggestions? Thanks.

Also have the cars four wheel alignment checked, I had both of my cars done last year. Make sure is a proper four wheel aligner not a two wheel job pretending to do four wheel.

Default Check wheel and hub also

Incorrect alignment will cause uneven wear accross the tread pattern, ie scruff one side prematurely.

Incorrect inflation - low pressure will wear both edges of the tyre, overinflation will wear the centre.

For a non even wear around the circumference, check the wheel and hub for damage (run out or wobble). May not adversely affect balance, and may not show up when balancing the new tyre as the balancing machine will be shrouded and the operator is probably not paying a lot of attention anyway

Check the tyre for damage to sidewall and base which might allow air to enter through wall and start delaminating tyre. This produces uneven rotational wear patterns. Does not need to be significant damage.

I had a set of Michelin MV's go with 80% tread left. Front pair all over the place and bulges up to an inch. Was put down to car being off road for two years while owners estate was finalised. Replaced fronts and examined rears which appeared OK, but they followed about 8,000 k later.

I suspect that the problem is a combo of allignment, wheel damage and tyre damage, possibly all caused in one with a kerb knock when parking.
