Find someone with a "ginger beer plant" (Google it if you don't know what that is) They will more than pleased to give some of the "sludge" as it continuously makes more of it. After that ,it's free ginger beer "for ever", or as long as you like to keep it going for. You can start from scratch if you like.

Tried Sainsbury's, awful stuff. Morrisons own is best I've found, easily equal to Old Jamaica.

Wish I could get it here. Just have to settle for a nice bottle of vino tinto. Seriously, if you can find it try Portuguese wine, it's pretty good especially from the Alentejo region.

The nub of the question is whether you like the car enough to want to keep it for the long haul. Firstly I think its better to keep the 'devil you know' rather than sell and move on to something that, however good it looks may be a money pit. The cars that I've had have all had one thing in common, that is I have always got them running and on the road quickly to see if I really gel with them.
Financially speaking classic cars, excepting a few at the top end, are a money pit. I look at it as a 'lifestyle choice' ahem ahem. After farting about with a few cars I've found two that suit my criteria and I am realistic about their inherent virtues and vices. Its like a marriage commitment but so much cheaper!

Well, sadly, the costs of fixing the engine exceed any likely future cost of the car. So it's thank you and good night from me on this one.

So if anyone's interested in a 121 with an engine in bits but pretty sound bodywork-wise, do shout.

I like the idea, Robert, but another engine's got a good chance of being as problem-packed as the one that's now in bits!

I don't understand. Are you saying the engine has completely had it? That seems very odd to me

As above, I would def consider whacking another engne in there and I might be able to help you out there. I put in a fantastic second hand motor years ago which has been great. Know what you mean though; it's a gamble

If you are serious about baling out, let me know as I might be interested. But I think it's not your best move

Unless you're willing to part with the considerable amount of money to purchase a good engine and then install it I would be ruthless. Id estimate anywhere between £300-1000 for an unknown and around £2,000 for a rebuilt engine, plus £500ish for replacement. On the other hand if you've a car which is otherwise excellent and which you love to drive then do so. I find that I have a finite amount of interest in any car, guess Im a bit of a motor slag!
There's a green 123GT on Car& classic sales I fancy for £6k...

I have a decent B18 motor which was running nicely but swapped out of a car by a guy doing a modern diesel conversion. If that would help out, it's yours for £75 plus the carriage.
