Late model Mk1 XC60 Gearbox compatibility ?
Background - last November I bought a one owner 100k miles XC60 as a mini project as the automatic gearbox was banging/thunking when going from R to P/N and D to P/N when hot. Much to my surprise and delight at the time, a software update at the dealer cured it completely (oil had already been changed). I've kept is as my daily driver and flogged my XC90 & V40.
However, 17,000 miles later it's starting to show other issues, mainly occasional harsh shifts into 1 and 2 when hot and also occasional harsh downshifts from 4 to 3. By occasional I mean say one in every 5 -10 times. I don't see the point of clearing the adaptations as I did the full re-adaptation process following the software updates so if the TCM is working correctly it should arrive back at the same parameters. Costs nothing to try though... So I'm thinking it needs a new box, that's likely to only get worse over time. It's the TF-80SC that was fitted to all auto E4 & E5 AWD D5's. Here's the question - part number matching. My car is one of the last of the 2015MY (reg. June) with the 215 engine, the 2016MY & 2017MY had the 220 engine. I've found a box from a Jan 2017 XC60 D5 with very low mileage but the part number is different - however it's a TF-80SC and the part number of the TCM (which is integral to the box) is the same. The part number of my gearbox is : 1283165 The part number of the 2017 car box is : 1285176 (The TCM on both is : 31312609) I know part numbers are often superseeded when parts are updated - what's anyone's view on whether it will be compatible? Had it been a P2 XC90 or 70 or 60 which is where much of my experience is - I wouldn't have thought twice and I would have just swapped over any wiring or sensors that were different - done that 10's of times with no issues mainly on AW55's but some TF80's. But for some reason I'm nervous on this one........ Any wisdom appreciated.

Unfortunately my local dealer in Hull and local Indie (who is en ex-dealer mechanic) steadfastly deny that there is any Volvo procedure to open up the gearbox or modification available - instead insisting that a wholesale replacement is the only option. Do you know if there is a part number or technical bulletin reference for the modification? I'd like to look into that and understand the cost of the kit - my preferred option would be to repair and keep the original box. Is the fitting of the kit documented in VIDA? Also second hand, complex parts are always a lottery. Where I am at currently is the gearbox that I've located (if that will work) will cost circa £700 (it's from a 43k car), whichever option I go for the gearbox will need to be removed and replaced which is a lengthy job. My worry would be would the upgrade kit definitely fix my problems? They're minor at the moment and some people probably wouldn't notice them but I expect they will develop.
