Got me bloody flummoxed it really has!
Check the LED with a PP3 9v battery

This was the way I wired mine up

Thank you Dave and Mr 4x4.

Dave I’m not sure I understand what you mean, I’m afraid I don’t know what all those phrases mean about DB9 etc. I’m simply following the instructions to build the little unit and then read the instructions on the same post and also using a very helpful video made by someone using the exact same equipment on the same model year car.

Mr 4x4 looks like you’ve added a switch in to yours so you don’t need to physically “dip” the yellow cable in but in essence I believe we’ve done the same thing.

I’ve completely remade my little doohicky today and got the old soldering iron out so I’m certain the connections are ok and also certain the LED is wired the right way round and that it works as it turns on. However despite all efforts I still get absolutely nothing.

This is my method in high detail in case someone can spot something that’s not right:
Unlock car
Get in
Close door
Put red (positive) wire in slot 16
Put black and yellow (negative and one end of dipper) into slot 3
Turn ignition to position 2
Dip yellow dipper into slot 5
Hold for 2-3 seconds (the light is on at this point)
Remove the dipper wire and wait
Sigh

All I want to do is know what’s wrong with the blasted thing so I can order the right part to get it fixed and this is frustrating the bejesus out of new!

Why mess about with a Heath Robinson lash up !! Just buy a decent reader ,one that you can upgrade to other makes is the way to go , about £ 60-70 .

Because as mentioned earlier in this thread, normal OBDII readers won't work on an 850 of this year.

Try putting the yellow (dipper wire) into some of the other pins and see if you get anything from them

I’ve dipped the wire in all of the other ones and all I get, I guess depending on whether a circuit has been made is the light coming. on but no codes after.

My plan tomorrow is to see if I can get to the underside of the OBDII port and check the number 3 wire is attached and check there is a good connection when I put the pin in.

I wondered for a minute if mine wasn’t a 10 valve but I’m pretty sure it is and it definitely doesn’t have an under bonnet diagnostic port next to the washer filler neck.

Thanks for the advice guys, we’ll get there!

Where would I see the engine code?

Short update today. I made another little gadget from scratch today so as to cross off the possibility of that being the issue and I’m sad to report that it made no difference. I also unscrewed the centre console to have a look at the wires and the metal connectors in the OBDII ports and all is looking good and the fixings are strong so I can’t see an issue there.

Getting a little irritated now

Put your full vin into the Skandix website and it's tell you what engine and gearbox you have CLICK

Does the cigarette lighter next to the OBD II socket have 12v going through it?
