Default Handbrake

Hi,

When you apply the handbrake on my s60and release the foot brake, the car rolls back a bit then rocks. On a hill this cant be good for the car right?

Im fairlysure that this shouldn't be happening but have seen it on other cars. Is it an easy fix?

Regards

Jon

They all do it. The cars have an inboard handbrake system which has a set of shoes which are seperate from the discs and pads. The rear discs and pads only work on the foot brake and the handbrake works the shoes on the inner part of the hub/disc.

It feels freaky and that if there was a strong enough rock it would damage something. Im sure ive never had it on the S60 at work but i cant remember parking on a hill with it.

Try taking your car on Eurostar - they park the cars really tight on there; my heart nearly stopped last week as our V70 rocked back towards the following vehicle as the train moved off (didn`t quite touch)

They all do it right back to 140's it's normal for this type of system. Basically it is caused by the movemement of the shoes on the backplates when locked (handbrake on) to the drum. It is not faulty you can't fix it.

Paul.

Just remember to always travel with extra pair's of under pants. After three years of ownership, I still catches me out!! Must roll a good 1/4 foot easy!
