MY 2014 USB not working for updates
Hi,
I have a 2014 V60 that has the 'Globe' button, but it is an early 2014 registered 03/14. I have tried everything I can think of to get the map updates to work, but it just won't recognise my USB thumbdrive, if I wipe it and put music on it that plays fine, so presumably USB is working. I've formatted to FAT32 etc but no luck. Could it be that I need a software update despite having the 'Globe' button ?!? |

I drive 2011 V60 D5, phoning volvo Solihull quoted me to do the job for 140£
Then got in touch with Volvo TMS Coventry who not only did the job for 70£ but also did recall service for aux belt which Solihull seemed to just ignore. I can see why Solihull hub has so bad reviews online. Anyway, after software updated, got maps loaded from usb hard drive and after 3 hours new and shiny maps with some cool tweaks to rest of system. Worth it! |

IAM or ICM?
Just got a 2011 reg (MY 2012?) V70 T6 with software at v0993. Want 1100 or later to be able to update my own maps and get the many differences in functionality:
- route in green not yellow - ability to set destination (0993 only allows places to be added to an itinerary) - no 'cancel guidance' option - have to enter itinerary and delete places form there - too many 'clicks'! - Would like NAV button on centre console to actually bring up a NAV menu (only toggles header/footer with extraneous info at present) - music menu behaviour very different to newer version - every time I turn music off (IPod connected) when I turn the engine on again, it blasts out and needs turning off again - and so on, and so on... (I just lost a 2012 XC70 which had the newer software and it is driving me mad dealing with the old version and its different behaviour/lack of functionality.) So my local dealer quotes me something a bit over £100 to do this, says IAM needs updating but doing so can break things and then an ICM will need replacing (upgrading?) and this will bump it up to £270. No ability to tell me in advance whether the upgrade will work or not. Seems it's just random/pot luck. Dealer's technician says it's a two stage process that requires software security changes first to even allow IAM to be upgraded from 0993. But others on this thread say it is a simple 15-45 minute ugrade and that's it. Volvo head office unable to underwrite the cost of things breaking/not working and ICM being needed (maybe because this was not a Selekt car and has no Volvo warranty?) What's IAM and ICM? Why would upgrading IAM sometimes (or sometimes not) lead to ICM replacement being needed? Does anyone have any technical insight here? If Volvo knows about a problem with SOME units, why can't they tell which and tell me in advance? Hope someone can shed some detailed and expert light! ;-) |

True for phones, routers, modems, cisco switches, and modern cars The dealer says it sometimes doesn't work because that is exactly what he has experienced. And when it doesn't work, then replacement of the device is the only option. I've also seen control modules from older cars where the flash memory is failling. It still can be read OK, but writing to it causes problems, and the memory doesn't get written properly, the contents are wrong. Depending on what memory address the bad content occupies might mean the error is trivial and irrelevant, or is serious and causes big problems. I've had friends working at other dealers for other brands who had such awfully bad experiences that they refused to touch the car unless the owner signed a waiver document that waived them of all damages to any devices in the car, before they would start. And when things went wrong, the price to fix it was in the thousands of dollars. But sometimes nothing went wrong, and then everyone is happy. You just cannot predict what will happen. I've also repaired faulty devices from cars where the flash memory failled. The one I repaired required a new chip, which cost $2. My friend had a reprogrammer and we were able to remove the chip, read the content, program a new $2 chip, and solder it into the board. He had specialised tools. We both had specialised knowledge. The device worked perfectly afterwards. But that was 15 years ago, and now the tools needed are even more highly specialised. And the knowledge as well. So dealers cannot do anything but replace faulty modules with new ones. Such is life in a modern world where devices contain re-writable flash memory. The newer technology is better, but nothing is 100% foolproof, and nothing lasts forever.

I have a 2014 S80 which been updated today by a Volvo dealership to allow me to download map updates via USB. I have the same message 'Infotainment functionality limited. Remaining: 3h 5min I have now driven the car for over an hour and this hasn't changed, any advice on whether this is likely to succeed without further intervention would be appreciated. |

Quick update on the map download situation. I have now driven the car for approximately 6 hours, but the time remaining has only reduced by 18 minutes. I called the dealer today and they said to persevere, but at this rate it will take weeks. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Are you driving short or long journeys? It might affect how much actual updating the system manages to get done.
