Default New tyres

My front tyres are getting a little thin although still legal. The rear ones are fine. I have Avon ZV5 tyres on at the moment. I have always been loath to have different tyres on front and back but is this really a problem? Of course I could get two Avon ZV5 tyres but to be honest they don't seem to have worn that well (especially the front two). I live in Ayrshire about 20 miles from the nearest tyre place (Halfords, Kwik Fit). Kwik Fit do a mobile tyre service has anyone used them? Where is the best place to get new tyres?

Thanks

Brian

So long as you dont have a massive difference in performance, like for example premium upfront and chinese plastic ditchfinders on the back, youll be ok.
Other option is to put the rear avon upfront and some bettee tyres on the back, then you wont switch ends.
What size are your tyres? It can help with recommendations...
Your problem is that a lot of todays tyres wear fast no matter what class, its because of the efficiency/wet grip balance which takes priority over other aspects.

Thanks for your replies. My tyre size is:205/50 R17 93W. I never thought of putting the rear tyres on the front DOH. Good idea that. I will definitely look at Blackcircles though.

Well your Avon equivalent now is the zv7.
On blackcircles for your area they are 81 each fitted.
Looking at alternatives with decent wear reputation (ie not recommending ones known to wear fairly quick) you have;
Hankook ventus prime 3 at £101
Pirelli P7 cinturato at £111
Michelin primacy 4 at £119

A slight upgrade from the Avon but with similar wear would be the Falken ze914 at £93.

Balance wise, wear/performance/price/economy the Hankook take it.

I tend to buy from blackcircles.com or from oponeo.co.uk and then get a local garage to fit them.

I'd recommend Michelin CrossClimate or CrossClimate+. Had them on my S40, we have them on the V50 and I run them on my campervan. They are excellent all year round.

Just remembered, I have used Blackcircles before and they were very good.

I fitted Falken ze 914 all round early this year at around £74 each from Halfords. They have been excellent on wet and dry grip but cant comment on how long they will last.
I used Goodyear F1 eagle on my Jaguar which were better on grip but not too good for wear rate.
Its a trade off.

Crossclimate are indeed very good!
Just that they're very expensive...

I highly recommend CrossClimates! I have them all round on my Volvo, but on my Saab... I have 2 tyres of the same on the rear axle but on the front I have two different tyres again, seems fine to drive but admittedly I am trying to run that car on a budget as I plan to sell it after I move.
