Valve stem seals
I HAVE CHANGED THE VALVE STEM SEALS ON FORDS MANY TIMES WITHOUT REMOVING THE HEAD CAN IT BE DONE ON AN 850 T5 ??? AS ITS A COMPLETE WASTE OF MONEY CHANGING THE HEADSET/SKIMMING THE HEAD ETC.ETC. IF ITS ONLY THE VALVE STEM SEALS THAT WANT CHANGING, THESE USUALLY GET LEFT AS GARAGES/SOME OWNERS CANNOT BE BOTHERED TO REMOVE ALL 20 VALVES AND WITH HEAT AND AGE THEY DETERIORATE AND ALLOW OIL TO BE SUCKED INTO THE CYLINDER AND BURN... THIS CAN USUALLY BE SEEN AS BLUE SMOKE AFTER THE ENGINE HAS BEEN TICKING OVER FOR A WHILE AND THEN REVED... SORRY I WILL SHUT UP NOW AS MOST OF YOU WILL ALREADY KNOW THIS ...

I believe there used to be a way but Volvo did stop doing it and now they recommend head removal. Please let us know if you do it without the head being taken off, we'd love to know how you get on. Matt

ON FORDS I REMOVED THE SPARK PLUGS , TIMING BELT , CAM SHAFT / SHAFTS ETC ETC . WITH THE CAMS REMOVED ITS THEN SAFE TO TURN THE ENGINE OVER WITHOUT THE PISTONS HITTING AN OPEN VALVE. THEN TURN THE ENGINE ( BY HAND ) UNTIL PISTON No1 IS AT THE TOP OF IT'S STROKE ( I MADE A TOOL TO COMPRESS THE VALVE SPRING - THE PISTON BEING AT THE TOP OF IT'S STROKE HOLDS THE VALVE IN PLACE WHILST THE VALVE SPRING IS COMPRESSED AND THE COLLETS REMOVED ) THEN REMOVE THE VALVE SPRING TO GAIN ACESS TO THE VALVE STEM SEAL, LUBE THE VALVE STEM - FIT NEW SEAL - REASSEMBLE [ THIS HAS TO BE DONE 20 TIMES ON A VOLVO - SOME LAZY PEOPLE WOULD JUST DO THE INLET VALVES BUT IF A JOB IS WORTH DOING ETC ETC. ] IT'S THE TOOL I WILL HAVE TO MAKE AGAIN UNLESS THERE IS ONE ALREADY ON THE MARKET ? ? ?

oil seals without removing head
I have done it on a 240 engine with a specially made tool to hold the valves from dropping onto the pistons, however, if you were very gentle it can be done by getting the piston to TDC then gripping the valve removing the spring/collet and cap the slowly lowering the valve till it touches the piston [provided the T5 engine is one that will allow the valves and pistons to touch] When gently is said it means almost allowing the valve to just balance then replace the oil seal reattach the tool to grip the valve stem and replace the spring/collet/ cap etc. You may need to alter your spring compressor to connect to the head somehow instead of the normal heads

I assume there must be a special tool to compress the springs but no refin this write up.
uses compressed air to hold valve closed - VALVE STEM OIL SEALS Replacement (On Vehicle) Mark rocker arm or overhead cam components for location. Remove rocker arm components or overhead cam components. Components must be installed in original location. Remove spark plugs. Valve stem oil seals may be replaced by holding valves against seats using air pressure. Air pressure must be installed in cylinder using an adapter for spark plug hole. An adapter can be constructed by welding air hose connection to spark plug body with porcelain removed. Install adapter in spark plug hole. Apply a minimum of 140 psi (9.8 kg/cm ) to adapter. Air pressure should hold valve closed. If air pressure does not hold valve closed, check for damaged or bent valve. Cylinder head must be removed for service. Using valve spring compressor, compress valve springs. Remove valve locks. Carefully release spring compressor. Remove retainer or rotator and valve spring. Remove valve stem oil seal. If oversized valves have been installed, oversized oil seals must be used. Coat valve stem with engine oil. Install protective sleeve over end of valve stem. Install new oil seal over valve stem and seat on valve guide. Remove protective sleeve. Install spring seat, valve spring and retainer or rotator. Compress spring and install valve locks. Remove spring compressor. Ensure valve locks are fully seated. Install rocker arms or overhead cam components. Tighten all bolts to specification. Adjust valves if required. Remove adapter. Install spark plugs, valve cover and gasket.

Is there a reason why the traditional, rope in the chamber cannot be used on a Volvo?...
Whilst the compressed air with applicator sounds the best way, i suggest it may not be too practical for a Diy'er Jod I have cleared up the thread, people if you want to have a pop at one another please do it in the lounge...If you want to report any post to Admin please use the report post button...
