fitting hand controls now a lambda symbol has appeared
Whilst fitting hand controls to my 850 saloon a new symbol on the dash has appeared a small green lambda type symbol, now the manual says its fuel mix so my question is when I give the car a good drive should this symbol turn off?

Could be just a coincidence, or could be that in fitting the hand controls a wire has been dislodged from a sensor somewhere.
Depends on what has caused the fault to be triggered as to whether or not it'll go of by itself. A sure way is to get the code read by a garage with the right equipment, but this may well cost you money. Who fitted the hand controls? I'd suggest start by taking the car back to them and asking them to check for an obvious silly fault - loose connection etc. If this fails, try disconnecting the negative lead of battery (make sure you have the radio code!) for an hour or so, then reconnecting. If it's a spurious fault code then this may clear the code and turn the lambda light off. If after this the light is still on then you need to get the fault codes read. The engine may be developing a problem. Depends on your exact model from here on. My 97 V70 would have to go to a Volvo dealer because of the specific engine management software installed, but with earlier cars this isn't always so. I'd suggest you try the first two options, and then if need be, post back on here with your exact model details (date, engine type etc). Help is at hand! Cheers Jack |

Disconnect the battery for about 10 mins, this will remove the fault from the memory (make sure you know the radio code!!) If the light comes on again, then it looks liek a trip to the main stealers

By hand controls, are these the hand operated pedals for the brake?..What other controls have been put in..
What year is your 850, it is likely you can read your own codes, which are not limited to emmission control only Jod

engine code
The car is a 1993 on K, its a 850 2.5 GLT auto. No plugs/wires have been dislodged the only two that have been moved are the two spares under the steering column cover [I checked that they didnt go any where before moving them] One thing that has happened is the accellerator pedal has been pressed several times without the engine being on to make sure they can operate correctly, they are the brake and accelerator ones no other controls have been fitted.

Sounds more like a co-incidence if you are sure of the installation technique.. Try reading you codes using this link.. http://volvospeed.com/Repair/a2.html .Being Jetronic (20v) i would also check A6 ... Cheers Jod

Lambda light
Ive ran the diagnostic and come up with engine code 1-2-1 according to the list its either missing or faulty MAF Sensor. It is odd that the unit should just give up like that it was fine before.
I'm going to try to clean it with brake cleaner as ive done it numerous times with Range Rovers |

Try reseting the code and see if it returns.. Ensure the sensor is not cleaned immediately after a run and is bone dry after the clean.. Jod

engine
You say removed the Maf plug nothing in the engine bay is touched to fit hand controls that is all done inside the car, they are very basic a simple clamp around the column one bar to the brake and one cable attached to the bar is then clamped onto the accellerator and that is it.

Remove the codes and see if they return would be the best bet... Jod
