Default Nobody ever killed in an XC90 in the UK?

A while ago someone posted that nobody had ever been killed in an XC90 in the UK for the 16 years it had been on the roads.

Very sadly it looks like this is no longer the case after a crash at J28 of the M1 this morning.

On the subject of today the Police have not made any arrests which suggests they consider the deceased to be to blame. Very sad whatever happened.

It was bound to happen sooner or later.

I wonder what age of XC90 it was? I ask because the current models are much safer than the old model, which itself was obviously the very best of its day. Its track record is still outstanding, because there are so very many on our roads and a substantial number must have been involved in accidents by now.

"Smart" Motorway. XC90 was broken down and rammed by the lorry. If it's anything like most smart motorways then the stopped car probably hadn't been noticed and the lane was likely live.

From the picture I've seen it looked like an MK1, that said against an LGV possibly on the limiter there isn't much chance regardless of what you are driving.

Of course it depends... how the accident occurred etc but I am almost certain that below 100km/h, let's say 55/60/80/85 km/h crash, between HGV lorry and a XC60 ( i say XC60 because after being better at crash tests than the XC90, results from Euro NCAP and IIHS, XC60 is for now the reference in terms of safety at Volvo and not the opposite) i believe driver or passenger would survive. If a XC90 performs well at 50 mph/80 Km/h, Volvo did a crash test at this speed, XC60 will for sure be better.

Any number of circumstances sadly, driver could well have undone seat belt prior to planning exiting the vehicle, or may even have been partly out.

I’m sure I read the global stats (maybe not the UK Thatcham ones) and it appeared to be subtly but significantly caveated to refer to ‘car to car’ accidents, ie not with HGVs, running off side of road asleep into tree/ravine etc

Stats is a numbers game, and records stand only to be broken...

Thats a ‘Smart’ Motorway fatality unfortunately, who knows whether the immobilised vehicles occupants were restrained or even in the car at the time, could easily have been in front of it, bonnet open.

If its a high energy collision, potentially above chassis rail height, there isnt really any car guaranteed to spare you in those circumstances.

........but........

I cant find the reference now, however I read 2 things yesterday.

One was that nobody has been arrested.
The other was that the Police said the managed motorway was not a factor in the collision.

This, in my opinion, rules out the idea of a stranded vehicle being rear ended, as managed motorway would be implicated and the truck driver would almost certainly be arrested.

I did wonder - and it is purely conjecture - given the time in the morning and the age of the driver, whether it was a 'wrong way' type accident. Perhaps exiting Tibshelf?

The driver could have died of a heart attack, rather than injuries from the crash.
