For my money, it would depend if the purchase price were more modest, and the real price might become dealing with the rust.

No problem:~ picture now attached- the Hardura on this one is also trimmed with panel edge trim also from various classic suppliers.
For the windscreen wiper motor I found it easier to cut the opening as the template and then cut through from the bottom of the material to the hole- it can then slide round the motor.
Good luck,Bob

In the last few years of production Volvo didn't put foam insulation on the firewall. I added it on my 1992, and it didn't make an appreciable difference to noise levels.

Is it structural rust likely to cause an MOT failure?
Does the hole interfere with any functionality, such as air intake or rain water direction?
Is it simply a cosmetic hole?
Is there evidence of any other rust issues, or this an isolated event caused as suggested by prolonged debris blockage?

Bodge mode (look away if offended ): Treat the rust thoroughly, particularly any signs of tracking to anywhere innacessible, then stick a patch of self-adhesive bitumin roof flashing over it. Then fit a new insulation board as suggested in place of the foam stuff.

Obviously negotiate a lower price, with a lot of tut-tutting

It is a fairly common rust area. Price of the car is too high with it needing that repair but at the right price still worth saving the car.

You could just patch the problem areas or take a full panel from another car to repair it with.

The rest of the car looks clean, but it was the rust that was a concern and due to the placement whether it would kill the car or could be a bodge job for a number of years.

It has the 2.3 engine but mated to the auto box which was another thing that wasn’t ideal as preferred a manual.

In no rush, so will give it a few weeks and see if the restrictions get released and I can go and visit it.

The AW70 auto box works well with the 2.3 engine. If you want a firmer feel to auto gear changes it can be swapped out for an AW71L.

I would agree with 'DW42'. The Auto vs Manual choice is a very personal decision, but as 'DW42' says the low down torque characteristics of the 2.3 (and, to a lesser extent, the 2.1) motor ideally suit the auto 'box.

Four out of five of our 240s* were automatics, all four of our 740s, our 940 and now my V70 is likewise. *The odd one out was my 245GLT, which was MOD, but also a very 'drivable car.

Regards, John.

Yes that is good.

My only auto was a 16 valve 2.3 740 and it served me very well indeed. I wish I still had it today.
