Like jor said, if you only want a 740, then you will be in for a wait and if you want a good one that could be a long wait

I'm thinking a 940 is not only easier to find, but better. most being intercooled, and having the tougher gearbox!

Yep, I can see you have been listening and also doing some homework!!

Yes, most 940's are intercooled so more power/torque.

Early 940's , like 740's have the M46 overdrive box while the later ones have the M90 which is stronger, more reliable obviously and far sweeter shifting.

Later ones with EGR also have hydraulic tappets so no need to worry about having to bugger about with shims!!!

And because the 740's are older, it's hard to find a really good one.

Ah, more things I'm learning and things to look out for.

What years would the tappets have changed to the hydraulic type?
And what years will the M90 have come into play?

For the D24 at least, M90 was introduced for the 95 model year.

Hydraulic tappets came in at the same time as EGR for the 93 model year.

A 4-cylinder Nissan unit? Obviously well proven and I guess good back-up due to all those London Taxis but it's just not right!!

Mind you I've seen worse - a 4-cyl Perkins conversion.

I really can't see the point in doing a 740/940 conversion when there a still originally equipped cars readily available. A 960 conversion - now that's a different story............ :-)

I'm afraid my hunt is over, I found a 940 TDic in Northern Ireland!
I collected it yesterday and finished my 600 mile journey home this evening
the previous owner is on here too!
