My XC60 is on original key fob battery of 8 years, so I would say your batteries are of poor charge when changed. Did you buy a pack of batteries as I have had problems with very low charge batteries that were useless even though they were well within the use by date.

Take your fob with battery to a shoe mendors, they can check battery power and if no good can replace with a full power battery that way you know the battery is a good one and then you can find out if there is another problem, the batteries should last at least a couple of years, be very wary of packs of batteries.

I bought a pack of Duracell AA batteries from a cheap shop and they leaked after just a few months use, so I guess they were probably fakes.

My XC70 has keyless functionality. Hence the power consumption for the fob is a bit higher, but on the other hand it's equipped with two batteries.
I've replaced them once since 2011.

The fobs on the Freelander 2 charge up when docked in the slot. Nice idea but eventually when the batteries fail to hold their charge then you need to saw the case open & transplant to new case with new battery. That's on my 'to do' list.

I have keyless pcc on my XC70 and am getting the replace battery warning some mornings on the dash.
New batteries are on order and should arrive this week.

What happens if the batteries die though?
I know i’ll be able to get in the car with the blade of the key, but will I be able to start the car?

I guess I could test this by removing the batteries, but i’ll wait until I have brand new ones to hand.

Seems odd not to have a plan b option? Or is there one?

Plan B would be to us spare key fob or do you only have one ? Well worth buying a second fob in case one goes duff.
