my two-pennorth.

1) *lots* of people buy Volvos because they think they can skimp on servicing them. This seems to be a state of mind in the richer parts of society, whereas DIY fixes are commonly found in the poorer parts. So lots of people here buy volvos cheap, after they have been subjected to ridiculous levels of neglect. What you are reading here are *fixes* for these situations.

2) In the last eleven days I've driven my D5 163 nearly 3,000 miles, climbed 4 alpine passes and sat in traffic from -7c up to +24c in 5 cities across 3 countries. If there was a reliability issue, I'd have found it. And my car is from 2001: we *think* it went at least 40,000 miles without a service, in the hands of some chump who liked the sound of his own opinions on cars and maintenance, much more than he liked silent tappets, working rear brakes, an airtight turbo intake system, working electrics. He must have taken it to Stevie Wonder's garage for the MOT...

Yours uses fuel? Are you sure it's a 163?

One of the most reliable diesel engines around how one can draw the conclusion they are unreliable using your methodology strikes me as muppertry of the highest order

Most issues arise through poor maintenance practices.

I would happily buy a D5 163 with 250k on it. In fact I might do that today.
I would NOT buy a Land Rover Td5 or Range Rover Td6 at the same mileage.
Simples.

In this case the ignorance displayed was of such magnitude i had no alternative

If the OP wants to find a properly unreliable diesel engine look no further than the BMW N47 unit , They were horrendous, swirl flaps , timing chains ,turbos all failed with catatrosphic results at very modest mileages

Amazing a company that has consistently produced some fantastic engines could make such a hash of things
