Default Noisy Engine?

Hi,

My Volvo D4 190 2.0 litre engine with 6000 miles on the clock is clattery. I’ve been told that this is normal at startup but once warmed up it should become quieter. On my car it is noisy at startup but remains just as loud after heating up.

Can anyone suggest why this is so?

Cheers,

Sven

My 2.0 D4 VEA isn’t noisy at all, its as quiet as most 4 pot diesels get, its not much more noisy cold either, the last one I had like that was a 2008 Alfa 159 2.4Ti

To quote myself from my own review of the D2 2.0 VEA:
Quote:
However, there is a price to pay for the V40's ease of use and downsized engines... and that price comes in the form of noisy diesel clatter. The 2.0 VEA engine sounds awfully intrusive at idle and is too audible under heavy acceleration. I previously owned a diesel engine'd Volvo S40 fitted with Ford's old 2.0 TDCI and I do not recall that engine sounding anywhere near as rough and this was nearly 10 years ago.
I guess years of making 5 cylinder diesels "masked" the clatter. Soon as they drop it down to a 4 banger, it sounds horrendous.

However, diesel engines are supposed to sound like crap, so I would assume that clatter = reliability.

I've just joined the ranks of the V60 VEA D4, 2015 my with 100,000 miles on the clock. It is a little noisier when its cold but as soon as it starts moving it quietens down.

My older 2010 V70 D5 205 was far noisier on start up and remained significantly noisier than the d4 at all rev ranges.

So far I am finding the D4 a much more refined animal overall especially at cruising speeds on the motorway.

Ive had another listen and it is noisy when cold, but back to normal in the first minute of driving, which is well before its heated.

My V60 D4 was never especially quiet - it was OK when you were sat in the car with windows up, but it was surprisingly clattery with the windows down or if you were outside the car.

In winter weather the noise will be worse, all diesels are noisier when cold and doubly so in low ambient temps.

Super diesel helps - although mine still sounds like a taxi on startup and for a couple of minutes.

The odd treatment of Millers Diesel additive also helps.
