Default 440 GLT 2.0 with 150bhp or 135 bhp, how to tell which is which?

I've recently purchased a 440 2.0 GLT and I've read that around '93 some were 150bhp & later models detuned to 135 bhp. Can I confirm which mine is from the date of reg, chassis number or engine number?

If anyone can help its details are as follows:

Date of reg 12/11/93 (clearly built a few months earlier)

Vin XLBKC313ERC439288

Currently at 133k with only 2 previous owners so it feels quite unstressed but like the man in the dirty harry film says 'I gotta know!'

Thanks all

Charles

Quick update, I've just checked the owners manual. It reads as follows:

2.0 litre ' multi-point' injection & catalytic converter.
80kW (110pk)
165Nm (16.8 kgm)

But what does this mean in BHP ???

Any ideas anyone?

According to the manual the 1.7 turbo has 88Kw 120bhp, correct?

That makes the 2.0i less I guess.

Hi.

As far as i'm aware, there are no 400 series models with either of those horsepowers. The 2.0i has approx 110bhp, the 1.7 Turbo's have about 120bhp. Volvo never made anything more powerful than this on the 400 range, so anything above those bhp's must be an aftermarket or DIY modification.

With regards to other engine sizes-the 1.6 with inlet manifold i'm not too sure about, but i know the singlepoint injection 1.8 lump in the later models is 89bhp, and the standard 1.7i engines on the early 440's and the 480's are 109bhp. The later shape 1.9 Turbo diesels are 98bhp.

The 2.0i is only 1bhp quicker than the 1.7i, but the engine is alot smoother than the 1.7 (presuming you get a well maintained example).

You can make a 2.0 turbo-however i'm not sure how much extra bhp it will give you. And it would be a low pressure Turbo too. Don't know why i told you that, just thought i'd drop it in...

Hope thats a little help,
Dan M

Thanks for the info - we're also currently running a R?\"er 420 GSi and there's no way that it's as fast as the Volvo. Perhaps it's because the 440's only had 2 owners whereas the 420GSI has had 7 or more.

It certainly 'feels' faster than a few other cars I've owned of late, although that's subjective rather than based upon real hard facts.

I used to own a 2.0 Manta GT/E and they put out 110bhp but the 440 feels more responsive than the Opel.

Be interested to hear other drivers comments

Thanks all

Rgds

A 4-series with 150bhp was never made. 2.0 has 110bhp, 17T 120bhp.

As far as turbocharging the 2.0 => unless you are a mecanic who has understanding about turbo's, I would not go down that road...Simply to much work (ECU, manifolds, fuel pump, intercooler, lowering compression,etc...) You're more likely to either blow up your turbo, or melt your engine...

If you want to increase the horsepower of your 2.0 there are some things you can do that help (in a modest way):
- 4-spark plugs (Bosch for example)
- sportcat.
- custom exhaust (but choose a good muffler)
- induction kit (use a heatshield) or replacement panel (K&N)
- rip out the interior and chuck away the spare wheel :-))

greets

Thanks all for the info, clearly what I'd read about the bhp was wrong. I'm happy to leave the car as standard for now; the reason for the question was mainly that the car seemed so much more tractible than the couple of others I'd mentioned.

I guess that's partly due to the older previous owners not taking the car into the higher revs etc

Peak BHP tells you very little, other than where the engine will deliver its power. I think you'd get a hell of a surprise comparing the torque figures of the 1.7i and the 2.0i.

Knowing Volvo engines in general (yes, I know these are Renault...but I bet it still applies), the 1.7 will be a much peakier unit, while the 2.0 is lazier. Put a 1.7 cam in a 2.0, and I bet it wakes up significantly!

cheers

James
