Hi Eddie,

A couple of thoughts..(actually more than a couple!)

The handbrake on the P2 cars isn't it's best feature !, it's normal to find the car rolls back a few inches on a hill when you have applied it, it's the shoes moving until they reach a stop point, bit disconcerting !,

When you had the discs off, if you replaced the hbrake shoes i recall the mechanism can be put back a couple of ways.. did you find the disc/drum went back on easily or were the shoes tight?..

Another thing thats worth doing is to apply the handbrake when your going at walking speed, will help get rid of any surface rust on the drum inner (as the inner drum 'brake' never gets any use as it would if they were like old style drum brakes)

3rd idea.. are the rear discs new?, if you didn't replace perhaps there is an outer ridge at the disc edge that's not letting the disc pads settle in?,

4th idea.. What brand of disc pads did you replace with?, not all pads are alike and volvo OEM ones often have a Teflon like material bonded to the rear (I guess for noise reduction), have Def had problems with brakes squeaking with non OEM pads.

Anyway that's my 2 penneths ., hope it's of some help !

Thanks for the reply's fellas. All new brakes, discs, pads, shoes and fluid. Handbrake shoes slid on easy. Whole job went quite smoothly tbh. No heat from any of the wheels. Tried pulling the handbrake on, squeak goes for about 10 seconds then back to normal. Brakes and handbrake working as normal so hoping it's just the mechanism that needs a bit of tlc.

Might get chance Sunday morning to wip the wheel off and have a look.

If you click on the link in my signature, you'll find my handbrake rebuild video and may find some clues.
I noticed in your list that new cables weren't fitted.
Obviously you'll know whether or not that's significant.

No the cables weren't done, so I'm hoping it's in that area.

Ok, had my v70 for a wee while now, all new discs and pads, now both handbrake cables replaced and new handbrake shoes...car still doesn't hold well on teh handbrake though. OK if facing backwards...2" roll and grips...not so clever if facing forward though. Will just keep rolling. Any suggestions??

Hi rick,

Were the rear discs replaced, as sounds like everything else has been, the slop/rollback is totally normal on these cars (not very confidence inspiring tho ), how many clicks does the handbrake lever come up on yours ?, it should hold the same uphill or downhill., what parts used original volvo or pattern ?

Yes, new rear discs and pads too. I had the adjustment turned right back when new cables were fitted so it came up about 6 clicks...now i've tightened it to about 2...
Weird thing, mechanic said there was no adjustment on the rear shoes?? Is that right.

Took my 05 v70 to my local garage recently with poor handbrake and came back not much better after new Andrew page shoes, they say parts are poor quality and fitting genuine much better but much more expensive. Anyone had a similar experience?

Regards

Neil

Hi Neil

Yes, I have been told the same by my excellent independent Volvo specialist in Attleborough, Norfolk. They have "repaired" the handbrakes on a couple of my D5's over the years and they have worked fine. The OEM shoes may be more expensive, but WORK.

Just to add to this thread. My handbrake passed the MoT fine, I watched as he did the brake test and it pulled up perfectly. However I've just dismantled it and found the lining from one shoe was completely detached from the backplate.

So be warned, just because a handbrake works fine does not mean that it is fine!

I was lucky, I've replaced mine with no damage done but it could very easily have been much worse.
