Greg - thanks. yes I did remove the whole item, really easy isn't it. I will order the cheap items from E Bay and report back. The helpful Youtube clip shows a different headlight clip arrangement and bulb to my 04 D5. Dave

I have just fitted the inexpensive D2R bulbs from E Bay. Total cost for two = £16.45 including delivery. Certainly better than the £90 each I was quoted from my local motor factors. After many cars and many years, the XC90 headlight bulbs are probably the easiest I have ever changed. In daylight they look OK, just hope no-one flashes me at night.

MOT failure now if bulbs are the wrong colour. When mine was in for an MOT last week the guy said he has lots of trouble with boy racers.

Roy - thanks. I replaced like-for-like (the same as I removed), 4300K being the lowest colour temp. I am just a little worried that the beam of the replacements is not as sharp a cut-off as the originals. Hence my concern for others.
At 66 years old with many hundreds of thousands of accident free miles I ain't no boy racer. Dave |

Ok so after much huffing and swearing, repeated readings of the instructions here, plus a few YouTube videos, I can get the light unit out, undo the red clip, get the bulb cover off, get the ballast box out, and get the plug off the ballast box but....how in the name of blue hell do you get the bulb out of the ballast box!!!!?????
