Presumably, that's why there's so many head gasket options?

Yes they did but its a challenge to check when the car is 200 miles away

Interesting... its standard practice to skim most heads (esp alloy ones) when removed... I will make get a flat edge out and have a look...

Experience on here shows you best listen to Clan's advice !!

The problem is that, on VW Group cars, the water pumps often leak & fail following a cam belt change so they get routinely changed with the cam belt - that does not apply to a proper Volvo engine like the 5 cyl diesel.
The Volvo water pump is generally more durable and doesn't need changing routinely unless it's leaking or feels rough. Using a pattern part is not a good plan. There are Volvo dealers selling these parts on eBay at competitive prices, so there's no real reason to use after-market parts.
Suggest you also change the aux belt and tensioners at the same time, as these are known to fail & take the cam belt off with them.

Yup I know the score with the famous Volvo WP and tensioners

Tensioner and aux belt about 3 months old (genuine parts)

Came home to a load of bits in a volvo box.. and a shiney tested cylinder head ready to go on.

Hopefully back on the road this weekend.

Only problem is I don't have the crank locking tool... but while the head is off I have a cunning plan!

A new (2nd hand) one...

But problem now is that I can't get the F****** crank nut off.

Snapped a 1/2 drive extension (a good one) so I though bugger this... and went and bought a sealey 1300NM air impact gun - and it won't touch it either. Not far off giving up now!

You are not doing it right you must have the locking tool more so for tightening than removal ! 300 nm is TIGHT even tighter when removing when it has been on 10 years ..

1300NM is about 1000 ft lb, that's a lot! 3/4" socket, breaker bar, six foot scaffold pole and fat bloke?
