Default Dealer strange viewpoint

Going to supplier dealer to sort out issue with engine management light. They are sorting this out FOC given that I only bought the car late December.

I asked for price for a change of Geartronic and was advised that although they could do it they recommend not doing it.
Given the car has only got 77000 ish miles but is an 06 I find it a bit of a strange response.

Any thoughts as to why they should react this way but may be a CYA action if it goes wrong after?

Your thoughts.

First thought is to clarify why with the dealer.
They said it after all.

Because its not on the service schedule .... to whom did you speak ... service receptionist, or the workshop controller/master technician? ..... always best to talk to the workshop and get them to build the work/job card.

Hope it helps

It's probably also still Volvo's official policy ("sealed for life") and some dealerships are going to follow that to the letter no matter what.

Strangely, one of my local dealerships held that position when I first purchased an older but low mileage car from them 3 years ago (they still agreed to flush it when I said I really wanted it done) but within the last 12 months I have seen a piece of locally printed A4 on display at their service desk offering gearbox flushes and a price schedule. I suspect some franchises have recognised a demand and decided to capitalise on it.

I think TruckBus has the answer. Go the dealership in person and ask to speak with the service manager. Tell them you'd like it done anyway, regardless of Volvo's policy and ask for a price. From memory, I was charged about £220.

They will be reluctant to do it because if they change the oil and then a fault with the box occurs after then it’s then down to them as naturally your going to take it back. It’s an older car out of warranty and they don’t want to risk getting caught up with it.

the problem here is not the company it is the person you dealt with ,
Volvo DO recommend the fluid change if the car is used for arduous tasks , taxi , or towing . Just ask them to get on with doing their job properly !
I have never encountered any problems after changing oil in countless auto gearboxes on Volvos over the years , they always work better afterwards and if they don't best know you have a problem ! always wise to get a gearbox software update too , It can transform the box on older cars .

Potentially a silly question but do the main dealers automatically update the software when they service a car or do you have to request it please?

yes a Volvo service includes updating some selected modules it does NOT do them all these days , in fact if the car is more than 5 years old it can choose to do none in most cases .

Car back from dealership all fixed. needed new EGR position sensor which had thrown up all manner if strange DTC codes. Sorted by real standup dealership at no cost. Clelands of Galashiels. nice one guys.

Spoke to Service customer manager who explained that although they could easily completely change the transmission fluid, he did not feel comfortable charging £200 plus in case it caused an issue. This is at least honest but he agreed that the use of the Toyota fluid would be a good alternative and run for 100miles and then refresh thereafter.

Dealership highly recommend BG Automotive additives EGR cleaner, oil cleaner and oil additive.
