time belt ..if its possible.
Hello.
Can you change the tensioner and pulley with out removing the belt and cam will not move? This is the question because my belt is good and its from Volvo but i guess it has a non Volvo tensioner and pulley. So i could just replace those by Volvo ones. Many Thanks |

There isn't nothing written there. Thats why i want to buy the original Volvo ones and install them, if thy are Ina as long its from Volvo recommended. I dont want to risk it on a 2500 mile trip

A genuine belt but non genuine pulleys, that suggests it's been done by someone lacking knowledge so why take a chance? The aux belt and pulleys and alternator pulley can also cause problems and everything should really be changed together.

If you are in there changing the tensioner/pulley surely it would make sense to change the belt also for what little extra the belt would cost?I wouldn't be so sure that the cam[s] would move especially when re-tensioning without they're locked in position of course in which case it would make even more sense to change the belt too. That's my take on it anyway.

I was advised by a specialist garage that once a cambelt has had the tension removed that it should not be used. Something to go with the glass fibres often used in its construction. Can't confirm if it's true but when I had to remove and replace the head (twice) on a Mazda, I fitted a new belt even though the previous one had only run for a few hours.

Hiya
You can but why bother ? I bought timing belt kit with tensioner, idler, pulley and auxiliary belt and tensioner (all Volvo parts) for about £150 and I'm good for another 100000 miles You can remove the lower timing belt cover (2x10mm bolts) and slip the belt through -i did this so I know it can be done but next time I'm going to use an impact wrench to remove the crank pulley I marked the timing on the cam and crank with the mrs nail varnish and kept checking to but it didn't move. Took me 1/2 a day being very fastidious and double checking everything |

I did so - one at a time - but you will need a helper to pull on the belt to keep it under tension so it doesn't slip/jump a tooth on any of the geared pulleys. You can replace the roller without releasing the tensioner just by pushing back the needle by finger to release some tension from the belt. May want to toss the reservoirs nearby (disconnect the electrical plug to the coolant reservoir). Use some chalk to mark the belt at each pulley to be safe. Obviously, the belt/gears should not rotate.
But I think the job is much easier just to lock the cams, toss the belt and replace the belt at the end while checking all the marks. No need to remove the belt from the crank pulley, just toss it from the other pulleys. You will need to properly reset and adjust the tensioner https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-qhJ8Vjhu8

As has been said, make sure your aux belt and pulleys are in good condition as well as the timing belt.
I found on my car the timing belt had been done around 2012 (from pulley date stamps) with INA branded pulleys, but the aux run had unbranded idler and tensioner pulleys, one of which was just starting to develop a rough spot and the alternator freewheel pulley was original (and not far off seizing in my opinion). Just changing the aux belt, tensioner and pulleys has really quietened the engine noise down. |
