Default What I did last week

Changed my right front lower ball joint. It's the later phase 2 with steel lower arms and a conventional tapered ball joint shank.

The same as when I did the left hand one in 2015, the ball joint was quite difficult to remove from the steering knuckle. The ball joint is noticeably larger than the earlier type.

However, after removing the caliper & disk, I was able to get sufficient access to lever the joint out of the knuckle, after applying some heat with a torch - take care though, you don't want too much heat near the wheel bearing.

Knocking noise cured ! Used a genuine Volvo ball joint, although after ordering it I found a Lemforder for half the price. At least I knew I was getting the correct part, ordering from Caffyns Volvo parts in Eastbourne - very helpful & knowledgeable guys, gave me a bit of discount too.

Correct, the original ball joint I've removed from the car had the Lemforder small triangle on it.

Replaced rear shocks, put in spring helpers.
Yes, I know, there are better options.
But this car is 260k, 18 years old.
I'm not spending 10-15x cost of rubber inserts on new springs.
Gearbox may or may not last another year..

Had another seized brake caliper - the third on my car, I wish I'd rebuilt them all from day one.
The chrome on the piston had rusted, hence the seizure.
Rebuilt using repair kit with new piston, from ebay seller Bigg Red.
Pretty good quality parts, IMHO.

Decided tonight when I came home the Merc should get an old change, so up it went and sump plug removed. I'll leave it there until tomorrow to allow as much as possible of the old oil to drain then refill tomorrow with MBs finest 228.5 along with a new filter..
Yes it's a Volvo forum but and the XC90 can be seen in every picture
