Assuming it's the same as the B230ET fitted to the 740, it should be 900rpm.

In that case, I appear to have sorted the problem. The engine shaking that I do not remember being there before, probably was, I did not notice it until the lumpy idling also appeared.

Thanks.

Shaking as in vibrating, but not excessively. I cannot remember how much the engine vibrated before the lumpy idling. At idle it is enough to make the car feel like it is vibrating as well. But open the bonnet and the engine is just vibrating about as I would expect. I think that part may just me noticing it for the first time.

A 4 cylinder 2.3 litre is never going to be the smoothest of engines.

Yes and looking at a few you tube videos of engines running, mine is fine. I think I will clean the MAF sensor, is electrical contact cleaner OK, or should I buy the specialist MAF cleaner?

Contact cleaner is probably no good at all for cleaning the MAF as most contain a lubricant. This lubricant will carbonise on the wire putting the carbon back on you've just cleaned off!

I used carb cleaner on mine, disconnected the engine side hose first, sprayed it into the air passage, refitted the engine side hose, removed the air filter side hose and sprayed the air passage from that end as well.

The mass airflow sensor was cleaned with Halfords electrical contact cleaner and the lumpiness has gone.

I had to remove the end of a pipe to the turbo to then take off the air filter cover and unbolt the MAF from that. Why not have the bolts go the other way?

It was quite mucky inside the pipe and the wire mesh covers were very dirty.

Well, it ran beautifully smoothly, once and then today, total refusal to start. I took out the MAF again and a tiny bit of black plastic came out. It was very dirty, so something was maybe dislodged.

I am going with it is now gubbed. New one ordered off ebay for £46, rated seller, 40 MAFs already sold and feedback is fine for the other ones. Its not Bosch, but the numbers match.

Changed the MAS and nothing. Car will not start. Is this a coincidence or can changing the MAS cause an issue elsewhere?

Car turns over fine and it has almost started a couple of times.
