HU 803 premium vs high performance?
Anyone know an easyish way to tell if the premium system is fitted to HU 803 equipped s60? I’m looking at a few 2003/4 model s60’s (d5 se) and really want the upgraded version with 300w amp and premium speakers.
Did the standard d5 se have the base model unit? Are the premium speakers standard in the se or do they just come with the premium upgrade? Many thanks!! |

I think I read the premium systems have more speakers. Might be easy to count 'em.

Should see these three buttons and no radio cassette slot.
There is also the HU-650 (google up + Images) on 2005 and up models I think, not that good compared to the HU-803 or HU-850 The HU-803 was installed with the PA-300 amp plus premium speakers in doors, rear deck, tweeters and dashboard speaker. The HU-613 was installed standard without amp, or optional with the PA-200 amp plus better speakers in doors. Personal taste, the base speakers sound better with the HU-803 unless one is pumping the sound near it's maximum level. However, if it's rather the owner who has upgraded himself the radio it's not a warranty it will also have the premium speakers and he could also have got only the PA-200 to work with the HU-803. http://accessories.volvocars.com/en-...CC-425595/2004 (scroll with the arrows on the page)

Hmmm...I was under the impression that a s60 SE came with the 11 speaker 200w amp high performance set up, and the premium pack upgrades the amp and speakers to 300w/13. If so how can you tell the premium speakers and amp apart from boggo spec?
Anyone? |

Yes, I’ve bought another one! Sold my wonderful s60 to buy a brand new XC60 D4 R Design Lux Nav, but...missed my s60. Still have the XC60 but bought a 175k d5 SE 04 reg for a cheap work commute car.
And I tell you what...the £500 650w 14 Speaker Harmon Kardon upgraded stereo in the XC60 is not a match for the s60’s hu850. The standard hu803 with 200w amp in the 04 car is actually pretty close to the premium sound option in the 54 car I owned, with actually a little more bass if I’m honest. I’ve since discovered that the s60’s stereo options are: S60 S - HU 613 no Dolby centre speaker on dash no amp or HU 650 9 Speaker white label performance speakers with ?optional 200w amp S60 SE - HU 803 9 (or 11?) blue label high perfromance speakers with 200w under seat amp S60 SE - With premium upgrade pack HU 850 13 yellow label premium speakers and 300w amp. Has extra mid range driver in front doors and 4 more in ?rear doors and rear shelf I think the premium speakers were also of a different construction too (cloth vs paper cones?), but still Dynaudio Thought I knew volvos pretty well but still learning... Mine has the HU-850 with the full 13-speaker system however there is nothing in terms of labelling, no dynaudio badges etc anywhere to be found.
To give an example of how good the system sounds, if you fade/balance the audio so that it plays only through the front passenger door speakers, the music still sounds FAR better than any other car I've been in, using only a quarter of the system's speakers!! My Girlfriend just bought a C30 with the basic stereo in and I cannot believe how bad it sounds compared to mine. Yet compared to any other regular car, the basic C30 stereo sounds quite good! |

I think if you look underneath the rear parcel shelf in the boot you will see the yellow labels in the bottom of the speakers. Apparently an easy way to spot a premium upgraded 13 speaker 300w system. You’re right they don’t say dynaudio on them like they did I think on the older c70 ones.
Awesome sounding things |

None of these speakers were made by Dynaudio, this is a myth stemming from the P1 cars.
The yellow-label Premium speakers were made by Harman. |
