I can see what you mean re. the 160k plus mileage issue but a turbo rebuild isn't as much as you think if the main components aren't badly damaged. Would you consider other trim levels possibly even an R whats your budget?

Blue I am with Andy, I think if you look at your budget you might not be that far of looking at a T5-R or an R.
Mileage wise I have a 855 R with just under 240k miles and is very relaible, if you lived closer I would take you out in all my 850's, they all have diffrent mileage and diffrent stages of tune. If you buy a dog it can be expensive to bring back to what it should be. Take your time in choosing and drive plenty of them so you get to know what they are like.

I have had nearly every model in the 850 range and have to say the only engine I did not like was the 2ltr, the deisel is a fantastic engine and very reliable when maintained correctly. My prefrence is the 2.3 turbo, silky smooth and an absolute pleasure to drive.

It has to be either the T5 or diesel. All the petrol engines are returning 20mpg around town and cruising on the motorway they will all be around the same, so you might as well have the extra power of the T5 engine.

The TDI is decent for economy but hard to find.

I like the quick response that is obtainable on the T5 if you run into a tricky situation that needs a little oomph and agility to get out of (hopefully this doesn't happen all too often but I, like many others, have been caught in that situation).

I have talked to many other Volvo drives (not T5 owners) and I've come up with the distinct impression they don't quite comprehend there is a model of Volvo running that looks just the same as there's - but that's where the similarity ends.

Probably 95% of the time my vehicle doesn't get into turbo mode and the economy is reasonable in my opinion (about 30 m.p.g highway - 24 mixed city) and it hasn't cost me any more maintenance wise than previous vehicles I've owned.

My wife won't touch the T5 as it frightens the hell out of her (she drives a 240 estate), and there is absolutely no way in which the two vehicles can be compared because they are alike as chalk and cheese, the only common feature being the emblem that identifies both of these vehicles as being Volvos.

No brainer, the t5 is easily the best engine available, its what ever you want it to be if you fancy just bimbling around taking it easy its as flexible and docile as you like, however if you need to get past that cardigan clad bozo whos creating mayhem with his van towing antics you can be past in a instant (not forgeting of course to give the traditional agincourt salute as you pass him) the other great thing is running costs reliabilty etc are on a par generally with the lesser models
