Cam Belt Change

How easy is it to replace cam belt on the 2008 2.4 D5 engine ?
We have bought a nice C70 hard top convertible but it doesn't mention about the cambelt being changed in amongst the very sketchy service history.
I'm going to get the cambelt kit complete with tensioners and every other bit I need. The car has only done 168,000 miles so it is still a youngster mileage wise.

Not a lot of access on mine, not sure i would want to do myself, the access to the bottom side would need the engine mount taking off?

I had mine done at the Volvo Workshop in Chesterfield, they did it for £350 iirc. The service interval is every 108k

i had them check the other pulleys too as i mentioned having a recent snapped power steering belt.

They gave it a good look over and found a vibration coming from one of the pulleys and was completely unnoticeable in the car.

Having read about a lot of people's pain when the auxiliary belts had snapped and sheered through the cam belt i wanted all my belts replacing

Engine mount off, crank pulley off (this is done up to 300Nm so impact gun very useful here) and you will likely need to jack the engine up and down on that side to reach the bolts on the tensioner/idler.

Havent done a D5 but have done T5 which is nearly identical proceedure wise.

You will need a crank pulley holding tool to do up the 30mm nut as well.

Do-able at home on the driveway for sure but a bit fiddly due to having to raise and lower engine so much.

How easy depends on your experience of course , it can range from fairly easy to horrible and even worse , you could mess it up .

don't forget the aux. belts and tensioners as well they must be changed at the same time there are two sets of aux. belts and tensioners on your car .

Don't forget the lower crank pulley as mentioned above . you need the crank pulley locking tool to be able to tighten it correctly to 300 nm and have the correct range torque wrench to do this . Another point, the 4 crank pulley bolts must be renewed as they are stretch bolts and have a particular torque and further manual tightening by a certain number of degrees .

always use a torque wrench on ALL screws and bolts , they screw directly into the aluminium cylinder block and would be very difficult to repair .

so altogether a lengthy job .. you might want to put it into a dealer depending how you feel about it all . they would charge about 2.5 hours labour .

The aux belts and tensioners on the C70 never give problems by the way , if serviced properly .
At your mileage you might find the big bushes on the back of the front suspension arms worn and also the rear anti roll bar link rod joints which lead a hard life keeping the rear level on your 1750 kg car !
