Brissle thanks for updating. It may be of use to someone in the future.
A liberal dousing in lubricant once in a while can't hurt.

If properly engaged you should now have the minimal movement I described.

Yeah, the rain has appeared back here. Thanks for that.

During the repair I believe the tow bar was removed and replaced, because we found the plastic cover for the lock had been removed and left in the car.

I am towing a caravan and it seems quite safe, but I don't remember it feeling as loose as this previously. I can hear quite a lot of noise when towing.

We are miles away from the garage which did the repair, so cannot go back to them.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
The green visual safety marker is showing presumably indicating it is actually locked on ?

I spray tow ball arm and reciver with duck oil every time I engage the removable tow ball. Duck oil allegedly dries to leave a protective coating that lasts up to a year helping to prevent corrosion.

I have found it so on the tow bar and unless I am kakhanded it engages cleanly every time.

Yes, Clan - as I said earlier the green indicator is now showing, so that means the bar is properly locked on.

Green Van Man - I like the idea of duck oil - will give it a try.
Which end of the duck do you squeeze to get the oil out..........?

You first need to squeeze the duck into a trigger bottle for ease of use.

Duck Oil was all the rage in the 1980's , just like WD40 really which is far too thin to do and damping . The Volvo detachable towbar ball mechanism is supposed to be greased with a thick grease at every service .

That's handy to know. I'm assuming if my detachable bar is not attached then nobody does that? It has certainly never occurred on my last two services and both bar & key were present in the boot.

I use a product called ACF50 and White spray grease which combined seem to do the trick ending up in a sticky covering.

I do not grease the tow ball as the empty reciver under the car will attract road dust if greased, this road dust/grease will quickly transform into an effective grinding paste if not cleaned every time the detachable ball is fitted. Try painting oil under the car and see the sculptures the road dust gets formed into.

Duck oil dries leaving a lubrication film. Certainly my tow bar has never been greased by my volvo dealer at service time in the 6 years its been fitted..
