Default Airbox on '96 1.8 injection...

Hi, can anyone tell me what the silver metallic tubing coming from the bottom part of the airbox is? Also, there is a black tube that fits on beside it on the back of the airbox at the bottom, when looking inside the airbox it looks to be something to do with a spring flap that either directs air down the tubing or up through the panel filter and into the engine. Is it to do with the airflow rate into the engine? Sorry I'm not really much of a mechanic and so need all the help I can get figuring out which bit does what...

I wondered about this sneaky little shiny tube was on my 1.8 so followed it all the way to the manifold. I'll may be put right on this but when the weather is ver cold a little valve in the box flips drawing air from off the exhaust (outside the exhaust not inside) I believe this is to keep an optimum temp for the air to allow the fuel to atomise or something like that.
Im not entirely sure but Im guessing thats it

Hi,

Consider: theres are swedish cars..
The pipe from the manifold to your air intake box is to draw warm air into the engine on cold starts.
It does assist when using the car in arctic conditions or maybe a really cold winter here.
The flap will close when optimal temperatures are reached in the engine, when there is no longer a need to have warm air in the mix.

No harm would come from not having this system. Given useage in the UK.

If i remember correctly the VW Beetle had a similar arrangement for cold start assistance.

Des. . .

I took the pipe off on Friday, its now got a new lease of life as a cold air ducting pipe to the cone filter I stuck on the car, seems to be working okay so far...
