We think that’s acceptable for a car which can get us home if it snows and can carry our three dogs in comfort. It’s a big comfortable fast car. You have to pay the price somewhere.
Yes, that's pretty much consistent with both our family profile and our XC70 too.

If you are concerned about your mpg try towing with it, after that anything above 30 is wonderful. Motorway miles at 60 with a wall behind you comes at a price like 23 mpg into a stiff headwind wind. You pay one way or another, either time or fuel, as said it's a big powerful car, it's never going to sip fuel.

There are so many variables that differences between cars and drivers mean figures produced are a guide at best, for instance from a stop I accelerate in second gear, using first to get the wheels rolling, then second to accelerate the already rolling mass, others would put foot down in first making second redundant, all have their effects.

Smile 52.9mpg

My 30 year old son drives a very old Fiat Panda 1.2 petrol. He drives very slowly to maximise the mpg

Last week he borrowed my 2016 XC70D5 220bhp auto to go on a 350 mile trip mostly on the motorway where he said he drove at the same speed as the trucks, about 56mph. The computer showed average 52.9 mpg with an average speed of 39mph, These are figures could only dream about but he was incentivised by agreeing to fill the tank when he got back

He'd never even driven the car before

that's about right , The V60 auto with the later 2 litre diesel will do 70 mpg under the same conditions ...
