Random sat nav issue
My 2015 sat nav has worked fine for the first few months of ownership but on thursday it started playing up.
Basically it seems to think it's several miles away and the further away you travel the further away it thinks it is. This started in Leeds on thursday then half way down the m6 on route to Oxford it picked up where it was. It was then fine from Oxford to frome on friday but today just locally it has started playing up again. I had the same system in my previous v60 and had no issues in 4yrs and 105k. Its still under warranty so will take it up with the dealer. Just wondered if anyone had any similar issues. Steff |

Roof rack?
Steffan, you do not say what model of car you are having this problem with. GPS accuracy and latency can be affected in bad weather conditions, especially very heavy cloud. That effect can be increased if you have a roof rack or top box carrying metal items like bikes or skis that are shielding the GPS antenna. Does any of that apply to your car? Exactly where the GPS antenna is located on the car depends upon the exact model, but on many it is in the shark fin housing on the roof. To work correctly the antenna needs to "see" at least 4 GPS satellites that are all over the sky at all angles. In any event, you are in warranty so no doubt your nearest Volvo dealer can runs some tests for you.

Thanks Andy,
It's a V70 SE lux. No roof box etc in the way just now although I have to say on my old v60 I regularly had my surf board covering the antenna with no issues. I've just been driven from Oxford to Manchester and it's still not picked up where it is. It does seem to be properly knackered. As you say, in warranty and in for a service in 2 weeks time so I'll get it looked at..... in many ways I hope it just stays knackered until then so they can see the issue..... nothing wrong with a problem that keeps fixing itself before a dealer visit! |

I can already tell this is going to be a really annoying issue. She I drove it this morning the sat nav decided to work fine. I'm just praying it isn't working when it goes for its service in 2 weeks!

The car went in for it's 3rd annual service yesterday and despite the sat nav (annoyingly) working fine when I took it in, they have shown a fault code for the GPS antenna, so they are going to replace that.
Just glad it showed something. Fingers crossed that sorts it. |

The reassuring thing about VIDA is that it doesn't have to find the actual fault. It reads the logged record of the fault in the ECU. So it is possible for it to reveal an intermittent fault that has logged itself when it occurred but has not cancelled the log of its occurrence. The problem arises when nothing is done about the problem and the log entry is cancelled under a protocol that decides whether the fault still exists or not.
