P80 V70 2.0T Engine - worth it or not?
Hi guys,
I will link my engine and head to get your opinion. I basically need to know if this engine is worth saving. The head, around the inner cylinders, near the edge of the exhaust valves has a gap of around 0.3mm. It is visible in the head images in the link above. The block has some scoring, more like a scratch in the forth or second cylinder, that is not deep, because I can't feel it with the finger tips or nails, and the first or fifth cylinder is rough to the touch in the upper part, up close to the edge. What do you guys think? I know I can resurface the head, but is it worth it if I'm going to slap it on top of this block? Chears, Daniel Mota Portugal |

What was wrong with the engine to make you take the head off. Knowing the history prior to removing the head will assist in determining what the issues are and whether it is worth saving. Are you planning on having the valves resurfaced/replaced or just having the head skimmed?

I bought the car after it had been seating for a couple of years.
I was told the car was having some overheating issues. They change a couple of hoses and one day, going on vacation from Lisbon to Portimão it over heated and they stopped the car or it stopped working (not clear on that). The car was toed back to Lisbon and the mechanic that received the car told me it moved under it's own power from the toe truck to the workshop. The mechanic told the costumer it was a head-gasket problem caused by the over heating. The costumer did not what to spent more money so it sat for about two years. I was also told by the mechanic, the car had previously had a problem with the oil cooler, witch had to be replaced. I took a chance on it. If I can't salvage it I'll break it of for parts. That was always my plane, but I would really like to get it to work again. I'll resurface the head and lap the valves. Thanks |

I'm no expert and it is difficult to see the extent of the score in the cylinder from your photo.
My concern with the score is how deep does it go and is it in fact a split liner that opens up when the engine is hot - either caused by the overheating or the cause of it in the first place. The rust in the end cylinder could be water standing on the top of the piston for sometime through standing. That piston also looks more 'cruddy' than the others - assuming you have not cleaned the other pistons and left that one. I presume you took the head off and will have seen the state of the gasket and any obvious sign of failure. You will need to take the head to a machine shop for the skimming, so what I would do is take the block as well and get them to closely inspect the crack/score in the cylinder and diagnose the extent of the problem. If in their opinion the block is salvageable, I would have the head pressure tested to make sure that is also sound, lap the valves, fit new seals, skim and refit. Given the history, I feel you need expert opinion from a machine shop who can closely examine both block and head before committing to time and expense. Hope this helps.

It does help, yes.
I'll just cut my loses and break for parts. The gasket did not look bad, but will have a closer look at it today. I'm about 600€ deep in this car. I think I can, at least, break even. Turbo looks good, wheels are ok, and so on. Thanks for your input. Chears |
