Old ethylene glycol can turn acidic and then attack the very engine it is designed and you are trying to protect.

As for keeping a pint of antifreeze in the shed if your system is a 9L total, good idea! Putting too much antifreeze in can cause many other problems.

How to dispose of the old stuff ?
Its toxic, not ideal to pour it into the ground or to let it go down the drain and from there to the river.

The answer is to take it to the council tip in sealed containers.
Or a local garage might take it. They have to pay to get rid of it.

I had prestone and it didn't do well to me. Seems it clogged a bit the heater core. Also using tap water even just to 'flush' the system will get lime deposits after a while. I use only distilled water mixed with the genuine Volvo coolant which was far less expensive than what the internet seems to be saying. I paid the coolant around $25 USD from Volvo for 1 gallon of concentrate, plus 1 gallon of distilled water another $2. Total less than $30 for 2 gallons (have used about 5-6 liters), instead of 2 gallons of pre-mixed Prestone for around the same price.

Quite along and boring video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=69ymGTqHxRw

Hence my suggestion of using a flushing agent in the method i posted. Also in most ethylene glycol antifreezes, there are additives to help counteract limescale and corrosion.

I had hoped common sense would dictate the avoidance of pound shops for vital life-fluids for your car except in dire emergency. 'nuff said!

there seems to be a general decrease in common sense among the public.
Is it related to the growing obesity, I wonder ?

Have fun collecting the 300 gallons of contaminated water after you've left the tap running for 20+ minutes.

Notonly is it not ideal to pour it into the ground or let run down the drains it also happens to be illegal to do so.
