Default t5 trouble

Hello, I bought a 1999 v70 T5 auto last week and had my first proper drive on Saturday, it ran perfectly.
I started it on Sunday and it didn't idle right, I drove it for a minute and the engine management light came on and it went into limp mode. I bought a scanner and it came up with P0121 stored which is ETM?
What could the problem be, clean the ETM, new ETM?

Any help would be much appreciated

Always start with the cheapest and easiest solution! Give the ETM a clean. I'd also check if the car ever had the recall associated with bad ETMs.

Also check your intake pipework from the maf as well as a substantial leak from there to the turbo can actually bring the fault code up as well.
The plastic pipes are prone for splitting at the turbo end and it's not always apparent till to remove them off the turbo inlet.

I took the pipe off but it was in good condition so I can rule that out, what an awkward job.
If I do need to a new EMT what is the best thing do to?
Volvo want £500 to fit one + I would actually have to get it there.
Would an £80 contactless throttle position sensor from ebay solve my problem and is just a stright swap no software involved?
I understand they have to programmed for the specific car is it something you can diy?

Hi,

As far as I understand (I haven't done a contactless conversion myself yet but I have changed a number of ETMs), the Sacer contactless is a good option.
You won't need to reprogramme anything if the ETM is going back on the same car.

If you don't want to have to reprogramme a used one then as far as I understand it, if yours is a turbo, then get one from a car with a turbo, likewise if normally aspirated get one from a car that is normally aspirated.

I can't remember whether the white label was used on the original ETMs and the yellow label on the more recent ones. Sorry you'll have to google it! Then aim to buy the most recent.

Hope that helps.
Steve

PS
Use a new gasket for when you put it back in, because you don't want any air leaks.
Get a couple, they only cost a few pounds.

I installed a contactless throttle position sensor, the car ran well for about 15 minutes then went into limp mode again.
I scanned it and it comes up with p0121
It is intermittent, I can turn it off and on again and run perfect for 10min then limp mode.
My etm had a white sticker and I noticed some corrosion on one of the bolts inside.
So whats next now, new etm altogether?

Hi Spare,

In case it helps, there is a diagnostic flow chart for ETM failures.

For future reference for anybody, a new ETM solved the problem.
