I always reset the ave mpg reading at each fuel fillup. Then I compare the computer value to the mpg calculated from the miles driven divided by gal of fuel to fill. It means that the readout will not give the average mpg since the beginning, but this can be calculated from total fuel and the odometer reading. I used to keep track of that but finally quit.
Resetting does not give a false reading, except to the extent that the computer mpg value is biased falsely high by something like 5 % or about 1.5 mpg. Meaning that if your computer mpg readout is 31.5 mpg then dividing the distance travelled in miles by the fuel to fill in gal would give 30.0 mpg. The instantaneous mpg readout is the average over some short time interval like a few seconds. I think the instantaneous mpg is an interesting quantity and that is where I usually keep the display set.

Thanks moncman. was wondering how much as I am waiting for my new XC90 r design to arrive and was wondering how much more it will cost me to run than my year old audi a6 2.7 tdi s line.
Get about 500 miles from £90 in my audi so XC90 shouldnt be to much more to run. |
